In The Eye Of The Beholder...

Have you ever looked at a painting that lots of people have been oh-ing and ah-ing over..praising to the hilt..and thought..what crap? Paintings maybe..where the paint has been mixed with urine..or something worse..and the perpetrator..wants to call it art.

Or've heard some music..that others are raving about..and just thought it was a bunch of loud obnoxious noise.

Well..while I do give credence to the possibility..that maybe there's something there that I just don't see or hear..I also think there are really is just crap..or a bunch of noise.

For the most part..I have pretty good and eclectic taste in music..including " "..if it's relevant and has some kind of flow to it. I have a good eye for color and balance in a piece of art. But come on..really. Lots of times..I believe that people gushing over some things called art..visual or vocal..are trying to be the know..hip..etc. They're basically hypocrites..trying to impress others with their falsehoods.

Reminds me of that story.."The Emperor's New Clothes". When something is pushed at people and tauted loud and long enough..many will begin to believe or convince themselves it is so. Or they're unwilling to go against the current. I have to wonder just how many people have skated by to fame and fortune because nobody was willing to speak the truth.

before i got to the last paragraph, i was thinking about the "emperor's new clothes" ... ... and i do think many people speak positively about something cos they think it is the cool thing to do ... and there are definitely some well known modern artists i just think produce shit ... however, at the end of the day, beauty is in the eye of the beholder and there is just know way of knowing if our viewing something as bad, against a tide of praise, is genuinely "democratically" bad and "emperor's clothes"-like, or if we are just blinded to a particular type of beauty. all we have is our own perception, and if you don't like something, move on ... or ponder if you are blind... there truly is no objective measure!

Right on.
I did an experiement here.
Created a "sculpture" using the rusted squirrel cages from discarded evaporative coolers, stuck them on pipes of various lengths, planted them in a "sculpture garden" in a fancy art town, and put a price of $500 on "Monsoon Wildflowrs". Made up a card about how the sculptor was a locally famous junk collector and artist ...and people wanted to buy it. Of coure I took the money..laughing all the way to the bank. Art (some of it anyway) is a racket. The trick is to get a "commission" for a public art project, charge $50,000 for the project and stick the junk in front of a public building.

Mmmmmm....seems to be a bit of pent up feelings here. I agree with Free and just give things I don't appreciate wide berth. There is enough stuff I do enjoy to compensate for that I don't like and/or understand. But I do know what your talking

I don't necessarily know what's good or bad, but I DO know what I like. There are sheep that follow the flock, and there are those of us who think for ourselves. One man's garbage is anothre man's prize. Joe

Happens to a point where if I mention something that I don't care for and they love, I get chewed out.

I agree! A lot of people just jump on the bandwagon because someone else thought that it was good or because someone else thought that it was crap.

Like with movies... I like certain movies because I like those movies, even if they didn't bode well in the media or with the critics.. bfd! I will still like them.
