A Smugness of Circumstance..

Minnesota Public Radio had a couple stories on today about the 1976 Soweto uprising in South Africa. It's the anniversary day today. It told of how the African school children protested the white minority government's decree that they were to be taught only in the language of Afrikaans. Many of the children were shot down..killed..wounded for their peaceful protest. This was the beginning of the end of apartheid in South Africa.

Anther story told of the war in Sierra Leon..and the horrific things that rebels did to civilians..chopping off limbs.. ..killing senselessly.

Yesterday..there was an interview of a woman who had written a book about the various religions..and how people who espouse a certain dogma..as being the only right one..have over the centuries tried to impose their will on others..often leading to war.

She talked about how most wars are a thing of ego..a pushing forward of the ego of individuals..and countries. She talked about the populations of countries..brutalized by the various dictators..or policies of various forms of government. South American..European..African..Asian.. countries..have faced the same type brutalization.

Something she said that really struck home..is that people who have lived under these conditions..for any length of time..become crazy..insane in a way. Living under the constant stress..loosing loved ones..themselves sometimes..being wounded..maimed..never knowing if they will live another day..does something to the human mind and spirit.

I think about how most of us..here in America..at least in modern times..have never really experienced that kind of terror..day in and day out..month..after month..year..after year. We are smug..in our certainty..that it would never come that point..to that degree here.

Yet..we..or maybe..it's more correct to say our government..has..for years..imposed our will..manipulated the policies and politics of other countries to suit our own ends.

This was not intended as a forum to denounce U.S. foreign policies. It was intended more as a reflection on the state of the world..and how many of the inhabitants of our earth have been driven mad by circumstance..that most have no control over.

This is one of those times..that I come to..every few months or so..when I can't listen to the news for awhile. I have to get away from the insanity.

Does it ever get to this point for you?

Now you know why I don't read the newspapers anymore or watch the evening news or the cable news channels...while I try to stay informed and current...it is just too much to bear at times...

I believe in reincarnation...and that I have been here before. I have seen the scourge of war...and the foolish things that men do to unleash that scourge....

They never learn....one despot thinks that he can get away with anything, because who would dare to stop him? or a leader gets an overdose of nationalistic fervor...and starts beating the war drums...it never ends....

Sorry, didn't mean to rant......

yes, we celebrated Youth Day yesterday. it is very true that most of our population (black & white), in my opinion, is still suffering from severe post-traumatic stress syndrome from living in a state of war for more than 40 years. and the problem is that once a whole community has learnt violence as the only answer to problems, and has learnt that the value of human life is zero, it keeps being perpetuated. thus, in SA, most white people continue to espouse killing the "criminals" and implementing high security systems to fortress themselves in and the poor out, and most poor communities are wracked by the violence expressed in inter-personal relationships, in drug abuse, and in the high-pressure environment of overcrowded conditions. political systems become engrained in people's personal value system and it is a long long road to healing.

Most of us don't seem to realize what is happening here. When you put all those things together..and more..it paints a very frightening picture.

I'm afraid many will not wake up until it's too late.

Believe me..I do understand.

About reincarnation. I KNOW it is real. From my very early childhood..I remembered several of my past lifetimes..including how some of them ended.

Never apologize for speaking your mind.

War does horrible things to the perpetrators..as well as the victims. Healing of the mind and spirit is needed by all.

The altruistic motives expressed by the United States as a reason to get rid of Saddam..is a bunch of crock. There newspaper accounts and photos of him and Rumsfeld..cheesing it up. The U.S. supported him the first 10 years of his dictatorship. This country supplied him with the weapons he used against his own people..and stood back and pretty much watched and did nothing to stop him. In fact the Curds..whom he gassed..went to war against him..because of the promised support of the U.S..which went back on it's word.

And no..it's not a rant against the Republicans..a few adminstrations..presidents..of both parties are guilty of the duplicity.

The mainstream media here in the U.S. doesn't carry a full spectrum of the news..in spite of the fact that so many of us would like to believe our news goes uncensored.

That's why I listen to public radio and subscribe to the BBC News Service.

That's also why public broadcasting has been under attack by various government administrations. They've attempted to cut funding..as well as attempted to politicize how the programming content is implemented.

I'll check out the posts you mentioned on your blog.

It becomes rather hard to bear..just listening sometimes..doesn't it Joe? Imagine what it must be like for the people who have to live it.

Yes, even though I feel the need to keep abreast of what is happening in the world sometimes it just gets to be too much. I don't think I am even conscious any more of the drift, but I do drift away for a short time.

What can I do to make the violence around the world go away? I can only work in my small sphere of influence to make the world a better place.
