Chi-town

By this time next week I'll be in the Windy City. It's where I spent a significant portion of my life and, more importantly now, it's where my oldest daughter lives. Now I can't think of the city without thinking of her first. If I ruminate a little further, its about some of the things that I DON'T miss. Like shoveling snow, bitter winter winds that cut through the heaviest coat, and taxes that the local polititians haven't even thought of yet.
Yet, even after I've been gone so long, there are myriad little things I know I'll delight in once I'm there. The sounds of dozens of carhorns beeping and bouncing off the buildings in the loop. The rattle of the el as it passes over head. The swaying and gentle jerking motions as the train slows, stops and starts. The delicious smells coming out of one restaurant after another, making you wish you could stop and sample at every one. The simple joy of eating excellent and exotic food at often very cheap prices. Wrigley Field. Looking at all the sailboats in the harbor. The Field Museum, I love that place. The air will smell different, the grass will look different and the beer will even taste different, if I'm lucky enough to get one. I might even find a quirky old bookstore.
The stores of years ago that I knew, many with little old German speaking owners, are gone. As are many of the familiar landmarks that many of us thought would outlast us. But I'm not sad about any of that. You see, I'm going to get to see my daughter. And one smile from her lights up the old town brighter than it ever was before.

I, too, LOVE The Field Museum. Brings back so many memories. Those elephants were there when I was a kid. I still marvel at them, as an adult. Wrigley Field. The Museum of Science and Industry. Brookfield Zoo. Oakbrook. State Street.

SIGH

I miss "home", even though I haven't lived there since 71. If you get anywhere near Hinsdale, please wave hello for me...

I'll give Hinsdale a wave for you. I'll even eat a slice of Chicago style pizza in your honor!
