Cell Phones and Driving

You know, I Really had not thought too much about this subject in a long while until this morning.

To give you a setup for the story I am about to tell you, I happen to commute 32 miles to work each day, so basically I am in my car for about 45 mins every morning and about the same in the afternoon or evening depending what shift I am working. I travel a combination of city and highway traffic, using the local expressway north to an adjacent county in order to get to work quicker in the morning and to avoid stop and go traffic along the way. I am fortunate in that I go against the morning rush hour traffic in the morning and against it again in the afternoon, thereby avoiding the headache of waiting in said rush hour traffic going stir crazy sitting in my car waiting a 1/2 hour to go 1/2 mile.

This morning I am driving west on a main highway here in the Tampa area thorugh a construction zone. I got the Sirrius radio on Classic Rewind, listening to some good tunage (thats good music for those that dont get it) I am humming along to the music (ok I was singing the tune - Billy Joel) tapping my left foot (it was a god tune)doing about 55 or so, when I get behind this lady (wont make a comment on women drivers cause I am a bad driver too) doing about 40. Now I am in the left lane, which is the FAST lane, and I look to pass her on the right but cant cause there is a major dump truck or cement truck coming up on my ass in the right hand lane. I gun it (got 235 horse in my v6 ) and move out in front of the dump truck or cement truck (dont remember what it was, just that it was BIG) and get past her....

As I pass, I look over to the left in her window and whadda ya know...

There she is, doing 40 in the fast lane, TALKING ON HER FREAKING CELL PHONE!!!!!! God this burns me. I really dont mind ya talking on your cell phone when you drive, so long as you are keeping pace with traffic (which she wasnt) in the proper safe lane (which she wasnt) and so long as you have a hands free kit (which she didnt). Look, I didn't buy my first cell phone until August of 2004, simply because I didnt have a need for one, and I am a practival guy. But once I got in sales I had to buy one becaue it is practically a necessity. I am still on my FIRST cell phone contract, and my phone is one of those Nokia pieces of crap without a camera, withour neat ring tones, it doesnt "flip" open, and it doesnt hold any MP3's. I like it, I really dont have a need to upgrade, I guess you call that stubborn, refusal to come into the 21st century, whatever, I call it being practical. I make it a point to NEVER talk on my cell phone while iam driving unless it is absoulutely positively necesary, and when that does happen, I either dont slow down, because I have my hands free available, OR I slow down to be careful and move over to the right hand lane, or the slow lane.

Nothing irritates me more than someone that can't handle driving and talking at the same time, like it is the most difficult thing in the world to do. Do me a favor America....Use some freaking common sense..

ok I have vented, I am calm, I am breathing..and I have just made a complete ass out of myself, but I dont care, this burns my ass...lol

How do you feel about it?

I am guilty of it. BUT...I always use the proper lane when I am on it . And I keep up with traffic.

If you can't multi-task, then either get off the phone or get the hell of the road.

Being the fact that I can't stand people anyway, I don't like any other driver than me! lol - Actually, I have a problem going too fast when I'm on my phone. I just don't pay attention to that when I'm trading good gossip or avoiding slower traffic.

It's funny you should mention this topic. I just got a Treo 700, two days ago. It came w/ a blue tooth headset. I love the hands free! Now I can play w/ my radio, while chatting and checking email, as well as drive.

I can't stand the minivans w/ the soccer stickers on the back... They are the worst drivers!

OH OH I so do agree. I have always used an ear piece or speaker because but have used bluetooth for the last year, I LOVE MY Bluetooth!! I hate to drive by someone with their arm propped on the window chatting away not paying a damn bit of attention to their driving. Check out my new toy I Got a new TOY and yes it VIBRATES

BTW asking our fellow Americans to use some common sense is just silly of you, Don't you know only 1 in 25 have it, and the ones who do use hands free or wireless!

I have never had a wreck that was my fault decause of my cell , but back in July, got rearended here in covinton by an old woman, gk in bak seat, yacking on her cell. totalled mt expedition, two humans from the expedition are still under doc'd care, on is awaiting surgery. then you have the dog, who was laying on the back seat, he still has trouble moving from the pain

It seems when I drive over the bridges between the bays here, I see pretty much 2 out of 3 drivers with their phones to their ears and I always seem to pass them! Nothing irks me more than having to drive behind someone with no common sense and just chatting away without a care in the world! I have a cell phone and I refuse to answer or talk on it if I don't have my hands free hooked up to it. Besides, it's hard for me to talk on my cell anyway while I'm driving, especially when I have the top down on my car.

Here is an added dimention to the whole cell phone and driving situation. I am coming home from work tonight via Hillsborough Ave in Tampa. I get to the light at Air Cargo, (north side of the airport) and this chick in a Toyota freaking Corrolla stalls her car. I am thinking that ok she cant drive a stick worth a damn, but NOOOO!!!!!! she has her damn cell phone to her left ear and she is trying to SHIFT with the other, in other words, she is driving with NO HANDS ON THE WHEEL in a freakin manual transmission on a busy street at peak rush hour traffic!!! She is prolly steering with her knee, which would explain why she almost drove off the road three times before I gt to pass her. People, if you are going to insist on driving a car with a stick as opposed to an automatic, then please have some common sense to have a hands free kit on board with you that way you can shift with your right hand and drivewith your left....

still pissed..
