the long goodbye

The photo of the Tom Sawyer, Huck Finn looking gang is actually my dad and his uncle and cousin. Dad's the little squirt in the straw hat. As the pic will attest, this was a long time ago and a lot of water has passed under the bridge. His life has been a long, fascinating story and a good one too, but not without it's hard times and life-changing struggles to go along with the good times. You might think from the pic that this would have been some of the harder times. Well, I suppose they were, but not in his recollection. They were hard indeed, but they are the fondest of memories. I guess that's how it is for most everyone when they look back over the years to the carefree days of their youth.

Dad never set any world records or invented anything to change the course of history. So, you might ask, what makes it such a fascinating story? For starters, he's been around for quite awhile and seen a lot of changes. Also, I would have to say that it is not so much how remarkable of a life that others judge you to have led, but rather it is the twinkle in the eye and the sweetness in the voice of the one who lived it when these memories come to mind and are shared. I believe most everyone is quite remarkable if we knew their memories and stories.

Get with someone who's got some mileage on them. Even someone you may have never suspected will have something riveting to tell if you can get them to. It's incredible what they've witnessed in their lifetime. Just do it before it's too late. Now that the long shadows of confusion and forgetfulness are slipping in and masking his memory, my dad's having a hard time recalling much of anything these days. I'm glad I got to know his story. I just wish he could tell it to me again like he used to.
