Got the clay just in time

Stopped by school today - got there just in time to pull my drying clay out of the plaster bats before it became a clay brick. I now have 4 different formulas of clay that I measured and mixed.

My clay body tests are a mix of: kaolin, fireclay, ball clay, molochite, machaloid, silica, and feldspar. I'm attempting to formulate a clay body that is white after firing, strong enough for large handbuilding works that are meant to be installed outside, fires to cone 5-6, and has a minimum of shrinkage (ie, less cracking too). Now I have to wedge the watered clay, form it into test bars, measure the bars, and caculate the shrinkage from both drying and firing. This is actually quite exciting to me as this is the technical part of ceramics. Learning the chemistry and measurements are far more important than the art part right now.

Now I'm working, listening to Enya, watching my cats race around the house, and contemplating making a bowl of ramen for lunch

Always fascinating, isn't it? The science that lives behind the veil of art.

HenryandJune - yep, it is fun. I love blogging - its the little details that make a blog interesting. So many people seem to be posting only about sex right now. I like yours as well.
