In honor of 9/11

I will be participating in the respectful silence that has been suggested in Blogland for tomorrow. This day is a prime example of the need for "perspective" (see my previous post).

The 9/11 attacks stand as the single worst instance of destruction caused by foreigners on our soil. And, it could have been even worse if not for the actions of the brave Patriots on Flight 93 - imagine if that plane had also hit its target - the Capitol or the White House. Their attacks were against symbols of our country's greatness - personal freedom and the success that it allows.

People often forget that more people died that day than at Pearl Harbor - another time in history when many people in our country thought we could avoid a global threat posed by extremists. If we do not learn from history, we are doomed to repeat it. When our country does not engage problems soon enough, they grow and eventually require the payment of a much higher price - prior to both WWI and WWII, we tried to just "mind our own business" and let others to confront the problems. It did not work then and it will never work - bullies (those who impose their will on others) cannot be ignored away, they need to be confronted and defeated.

I proudly fly my flag in front of my home in honor of our country and the brave people who defend us all. I know that there will always be partisan politics, and disagreements on direction and current policy, but on this day we should reflect and join together as Americans.
