Invading your own privacy

People are strange in their competing impulses to hide and reveal. Many jealously guard their privacy, while others reveal their most intimate thoughts on blogs, national TV or in homemade video porn.

The secret exhibitionism is seductive, addictive and thrilling to many. To expose the hidden lust, the taboo act, is cathartic.

At sea in a swelling pool of too much info, each one shouting I am unique. The dreary sameness of the millions yelling I am special.

At least your fingerprints and DNA are special! Just like everyone else's.

It can be fun to expose oneself, that is true, and to gain interest from other people - I can understand the playacting that goes on with these TV shows; prancing about and speaking their scripts for the audience - but we all keep a little bit of something for ourselves, and Blogs, while not necessarily private, are pretty much anonymous.

Let's hope then that our fingerprints and DNA continue to be distinctive...but I also find the differences and similiarities between people to be a costant source of interest for me. I do think your characterization of the "dreary sameness of the millions" is only one of many viewpoints one can have.

You make a god point. These blogs are a great example. When you write them it's sort of like a private diary, but obviously it's not private at all. In the end you need to realize that your thoughts here will be viewed and often misunderstood by all sorts of people. That in a way can be very cathartic, if you can understand who is doing the reading and overlook the replies of those who misunderstand what you say.

It is a calculated striptease. Greta Garbo was the master at piquing the public's curiousity by refusing to reveal as much as they wanted.
