why do i smoke?

I have smoked for ages! For various reasons, whether it be boredom, or stress, or panic, fear, shyness, a need to be accepted, a need to be set apart, I have lifted these things to my mouth and drawn this foul air into my lungs!

Over the years it has assuaged uncertainty, calmed nerves, given me a barrier between me and things I am afraid of! Cigarettes have comforted me, protected me, hid me! Eventually they will kill me! Smoking for me is a constant reminder of my own weakness, my own stupidity.

Sometimes it seems like the perfect way to kill myself without actually doing it! A way to perhaps avoid old age and the eventual decline of the body. A way to help me stave off my terror about the uncertainty I see as my future.

I smoke because I am afraid!

I asked a friend who is always very upfront and honest why he everbegan smoking.

He apused to think for a little and then said,

"to be cool"

I wonder what percentage of others began for that same reason?

I could never stand the smell and since I didn't ever think it was cool to smoke I only tried chewing. Other than the nausea I did like that energetic rush but eventually quit when I'd accidentally drank my coke can or beer bottle spitune too many times thinking it was my real coke or beer.

Alot of people will tell you it's just a matter of the mind...

I beg to differ. I have read studies showing that the physcial effects of smoking do indeed have more of an impact than psychological. It truly did lower stress levels, etc. And it's not all about mind over matter. Addiction goes beyond mental.

I'm a smoker. I've tried and tried quitting. So far, I haven't been successful. It is my crutch.

Yes, I think we all started that way! These days I hate the smell and yet I still continue! I tried the chewing tobacco thing when I was doing a lot of sports, but that really is awful!

Exactly! It is a physical and mental thing! And by the way, I don't know ANYONE who doesn't have a crutch of some sort! Thanks.

Then I am sure Darling that you know where I am coming from! Smoking is evil, but for those of us who are uncertain of ourselves, it is a necessity!
