Back stabbing bastards...

I am often amazed that human beings achieved any level of civilization given the inability of most people to work together cooperatively.

In my current work environment a monster power struggle is going on with people stabbing each other in the back, undermining each other's ability to do their jobs, and risking the health and safety of the people in an entire city in the process.

This process of infighting and back stabbing seems to go from the micro to the macro around the world.

What is the worst occasion of work related back stabbing that you've experienced?

What did you do about it?

The worst case I've ever experienced was when I took the job I have now. It's very possibly the best job I've ever had...and for sure the best boss I've ever had. Two ladies in another department decided they disliked me upon sight....they truly did. I had just moved here so they didn't know me and had no other reason to dislike me except that I was the one hired.

They proceeded to make my life a living hell for the first three months I worked here. They were devious, manipulative, and just downright MEAN. I'm telling you...women are the worst! lol I took it all as much in stride as I could....but even my boss noticed the problems.

Finally my boss's supervisor called a meeting with these two, my boss and me. I've never liked confrontation, but I prepared for this one! I had a three page typed list of all the instances of pettiness and manipulation as they directly related to my job...the personal junk I let slide. I was calm and professional, and somehow managed to keep my cool during the meeting. It ended with these two looking like complete idiots and I haven't had any further problems with them. I finally realized that they were trying to get me to quit before my 90 day probationary period ended....but I didn't give them the satisfaction!

This isn't a really big deal now, but at the time it really upset me...

I used to do a lot of presentations with a co-worker. I would usually do all the work...typing, copying, etc. She would show up and help with the presentation. In the end, she would take all the credit for the work too. People would go on and on about all the hard work that was put into it, and she would just say "thank you"

What did I do about it? I don't do presentations with her anymore!!!

As a side note, I don't hold any grudges against this person anymore. Right now she is battling cancer, and is not doing well.

Last year I worked for a well-known income tax firm. They do your income taxes for you. It was a temporary job, just for the tax season. My job was receptionist, and on each shift they had 2 and sometimes 3 receptionists. They always scheduled me with the same women, and they had been doing this job for years. I made a few mistakes as anyone would, but the entire time I worked there, they watched me like a hawk and everything that was done wrong, I was blamed for it. One of the women, especially, didn't like me. She used to say things in front of customers, or other workers. If she wanted to get on the other side of me, she would just shove me out of her way with her hip, and not even an excuse me. I was so glad that this was just a temporary job.

I think anyone coming into a temp job has to expect abuse from the more "permanent" people...so much fear there.

lucky me - i've really never encountered this problem, and certainly never with the health and/or safety of anyone dependant on the situation! maybe the gods are smiling on you, for being a short-timer there now?

puntachueca replies on 7/20/2006 9:26 pm:
yep. I'm on sort of paid administrative leave...debate as to whether to be outright fired (thence I file the mother of all lawsuits) or "exiled" to a ratty little trailer at the wastewater treatment plant. If that turns out, my biggest issue is getting my pink flamingos to decorate it.
Had an outrageous meeting...the new guy who took over the pretreatment program didn't even know what an NPDES permit was.He didn't like my comment "be careful what you wish for"...followed by the standard recital of civil and criminal penalties associated with willful violations of the Clean Water Act. The guy thinks he is immune....
The city manager blew up...whatever, the jerk is highly politically protected locally. However, the feds announced this afternoon they are "auditing" the city.
The tariler is looking better and better....

The thing about not being in a relationship it that creates lots of free time....plus I'm a writer..do a weekly newspaper column and a satirical newspaper web site on the side. So writing a couple of hours a day is standard...spend more of that time in Blogville because it is a lot of fun meeting people like you.

I have to agree with Shaye here. I am a makeup artist and backstabbing and bitching is as common as dyed hair. I have never understood it. I am from a large family of mainly boys and didn't grow up with a bitchy bone in my body. Sad thing is...this leaves me pretty defenceless against bitching as I just don't know how to deal with it. I ignore but that usually doesn't work, they just do it more if they think they can get away with it.

Bye everyone, it was a blast

Too many times!! Interestingly enough it's not from women. It's from a select group of men I work with. Remember, I work for the gov.

They've only been 2 times in 10 years where I've had to call people on the carpet for their backstabbing shit. Both of them senior management. And both times with blessings, the encouragement, and avery specific guidance in being professionally sarcastic but getting onee's point across from their boss.

Good for you!!! Got to be really good to survive.

I have worked with lots and lots of feds...starting 40 years ago on Capitol Hill, and in the last 30 years mostly with EPA, BuRec, Army Corps of Engineers, State Dept, DOD, DOE, FEMA, Customs, Border Patrol, FBI, and Fish and Wildlife....oh the stories I've heard.

One of my "specialities" is inter agency agreements. Like diplomatic negotiations between foreign countries (which I've done a little of). Much harder to negotiate IAGs between US fed agencies, than between the US and Mexico.

Our partners in Siberia are from a strange little branch of the US State Dept. The first thing they told us when we were to be co-located with them was they have diplomatic immunity....

Their agency has been in a nasty fight for several years, and they are on their 3rd presidentially appointed boss from Bush. Michael Brown (FEMA) and this outfit's last boss are the only 2 PA's Bush has actually fired. The "opposition" meaning former staff of the outfit even have their own protest website backstabbing the current staff. The Inspector General's ofice probably has a full time person assigned to the investigations being triggered.

I hear you Ready. We did something exactly like that to get tossed....brought down the wrath of EPA on their pointy little heads. The feds intervened and handed us $60 million of their money to spend from our ratty little trailer office without letting our bosses touch it.

So what do you do that you know milstd 1595 class A certs...my #2 used to run the Nevada weapons test site and speaks this lingo.

I worked as a temp for the city and had what was supposed to be an open-ended long term part-time assignment at our local convention center, working with the marketing manager. She was not the most beloved person there. I had my office routine with paperwork, but also had a fair amount of freedom and got to do some commerical and display art while there also. That was pretty cool too and I was good at both. Unbeknownst to me, my boss was in a disagreement with the city's public arts department and board; the head of that department was a personal friend of long standing and well before that assignment. Anyway, one day my boss sent me over to get a copy of the most current board minutes from the Arts office with the adminition "don't leave until you get the copy I want!" I did, but since it was intra-government, I had to sign a request log. The secretary went back and my friend , the Arts director came out and asked who sent me and I told him. He gave me a copy personally. His copy. When I got back, I told the marketing manager what transpired. About an hour later, she came back and told me my assignment was done and to pack up and go. Said I went against her instructions.

It was a cold thing. I was really upset too. Waiting for the bus, my friend from the arts board asked what was up. After listening, he apologised for my having gotten caught in her crossfire and said he'd see what he could do.

My temp agency was pretty cool; the gal who handled assignments got my end of the story, she called the marketing mgr., and conferenced my friend from the arts board together. And with a few probing questions established that 1) there was never an instruction to me to NOT say why I was there or who sent me; 2) even if there was, since there was intra-governmental paperwork requests, there was SUPPOSED TO BE A PAPER TRAIL; and 3) as the Arts Board Guy and I were "known" acquaintances for over 10 years in the arts community, "are you telling me that you expect your employee to lie to anyone, much less a friend, to further your interests?!?; 4th) and lastly, while you remain in your job as marketing manager, OUR agency will NOT be supplying your department with our temps. She went on to tell advise, "during this discussion, I've drafted our letter to the city accounting department, the convention center management. I can't stop you from being a bad boss, but we can't have you mistreating your temps out of your own spite."

A few days later I was temping full time in the city legal department - and it was a job that paid $3.50 an hour more than the previous. 8 weeks later, a very talented woman I'd temped for in the public trans. dept took over the convention ctr.'s marketing manager job. I stayed in the legal office for another 10 months until the assignment had a real end. I stayed with that temp agency until the owner retired 2 years later.

That is a very happy ending story. Good for you!
I've worked for several cities, including Tucson which is about the size of Abq'q. Mostly it has been a good experience.
But while the little burg I work for now really needs the skills of us "outsiders" the place is like Afghanistan.
The feds stepped in and told the political cronies that they were going to take away the $60 million grant if they put one of their homies in charge. Nice to have friends in other places. Pink Flamingo delivery coming soon.
