Linda must Die!

In these days of Free Trade it always comes as something of a surprise to discover an area where there are strict restrictions, especially when they are national rather than international.

In Germany there are presently seventy-four recognised sorts of potato. The seeds are handled exclusively by a firm called Europlant, and each separate sort is registered with a form of patent which lasts for thirty years. The patent means that only the patent holder may produce seeds for a particular sort of potato and sell them to farmers to grow. Once the thirty year patent expires the seeds may be produced by anyone, grown and marketed at will.

Linda is twenty-nine years old.

Europlant has decided, rather than let the patent expire as it should at the end of the thirty years, and allow others to plant, grow and sell the most popular potato sort in Germany freely, to withdraw the patent and stop producing the seed. With no patent to expire, and no seeds to base a new crop on, Linda ceases to exist.

Of course, Europlent can continue to control the market for potato growers in Germany with the other seventy-three, less popular sorts. The potato, as such, is not going to disappear from the face of the planet. Only Linda will no longer be there.

The cartel formed by Europlant is, therefore, able to control the market completely and stop free trade in the growth of seeds which have been proved over thirty years and have a leading place in the market.

DZ, Disney just gets the copyright laws changed to protect The Mouse. No need to withdraw him as long as Congree remains pliable.
