Extreme Methods of Penguin Habitat Conservation

I found this article on CNN about a group of mating penguins that are protected in an unusual way in the Faulkland Islands. Apparently the mating grounds of these penguins are filled with over 25,000 mines that remain in the area from the war between Britain and Argentine forces in 1982. The penguins are too light to detonate the mines with their body weight, but they are protected from any other heavier predators that would potentially enter the mine field. Scientists are actually happy about the penguins’ choice of this area as a mating ground due to the fact that they will be an unorthodox method of protecting the grounds from predators, over-grazing from sheep, and also including human intervention. I did not read of any plans to remove the mines from locations that have been populated by the various types of penguins on the islands.
