Watching the Cream Cum to the Top!

St. Patrick's day 2006.

Been out for a few hours and call into one of my favourite pubs, just for one you understand. It's a little thatched pub, stone floors, a few open fires (all of which are lit) and loads of memorabelia adorning the walls. The fires are surrounded by those old large 'beam' wooden fireplaces, roughly cut and wreaking of age old stories.

What'll I have to drink. Let me see (think's for about one second), ah yes a pint of Guinness. The bar man tells me to take a seat & he'll drop it over to me when it settles. He pours the first half of the guinness and as all true Guinness drinkers would know you got to let it settle; you can't hurry pouring real Guinness.

So I sit down beside the fire; wathc the flames lick up over the logs and disappear up the chimney. It's about 3 degrees outside but with the wind-chill it seems more like minus 3. But I quickly warm up. It must be 5 or 6 minutes before my pint finally arrives; but I didn't notice and time isn't important when you're savouring the moment; lost in thought.

He sets the pint down in front of me. But the second half of the pint had just been poured a minute or so earlier. So, I watched it settle. The clouds swirled around the bottom of the glass and slowly worked their way up the glass. The black darkness slowly moved from the bottom of the pint glass upwards, slowly consuming the glass. Mezmorising, entrancing, consuming.

I watched as the pint gradually took shape, until the glass was entirely black, save for that inch or inch and a half at the top of the glass which was perfectly white. The cream! I sit and admire it and contemplate! Funny how cream always rises to the top.

Funny how nice people attract you! How something in someones, voice, eyes, hair, personality hooks you! Funny how if you take the time; don't rush things and are really interested enough to find out; you can watch the swirling clouds that is in someone and gradually see them form in front of your very eyes. It takes patience, it requires desire; but it's worth it in the end!

I drank my pint as slowly, as patiently, as lovingly as I watched it form. The taste of a perfect pint of the black stuff beside a log fire in a thatched cottage pub in the North West of Ireland; ummm it was nice.

lol and Happy St. Patrick's Day
