HOW OLD IS GRANDMA???

Hi all,

I received this article from a friend in US...and i think it is applicable to this part of the world as well..of course we could hack back to the "kampung" days...which literally means "village" days..we can see how fast technology has progessed and at the same time our values as well ...well that would be for another time..enjoy it

STAY WITH THIS - THE ANSWER IS AT THE END. IT WILL BLOW YOU AWAY.

ONE EVENING A GRANDSON WAS TALKING TO HIS GRANDMOTHER ABOUT CURRENT EVENTS. THE GRANDSON ASKED HIS GRANDMOTHER WHAT SHE THOUGHT ABOUT THE SHOOTINGS AT SCHOOLS, THE COMPUTER AGE, TERRORISM, WAR, SEX AND JUST THINGS IN GENERAL.

THE GRANDMA REPLIED, "WELL, LET ME THINK A MINUTE, I WAS BORN BEFORE:

' TELEVISION ' PENICILLIN
' POLIO SHOTS
' FROZEN FOODS
' XEROX ' CONTACT LENSES
' FRISBEES AND
' THE PILL

THERE WERE NO:

' CREDIT CARDS
' LASER BEAMS OR
' BALL-POINT PENS

MAN HAD NOT INVENTED:

' PANTYHOSE
' AIR CONDITIONERS
' DISHWASHERS ' CLOTHES DRYERS
' AND THE CLOTHES WERE HUNG OUT TO
DRY IN THE FRESH AIR AND

' MAN HADN'T YET WALKED ON THE MOON

YOUR GRANDFATHER AND I GOT MARRIED FIRST. . . AND THEN LIVED TOGETHER.

EVERY FAMILY HAD A FATHER AND A MOTHER.

UNTIL I WAS 25, I CALLED EVERY MAN OLDER THAN ME, "SIR". AND AFTER I TURNED 25, I STILL CALLED POLICEMEN AND EVERY MAN WITH A TITLE, "SIR."

WE WERE BEFORE GAY-RIGHTS, COMPUTER- DATING, DUAL CAREERS, DAYCARE CENTERS, AND GROUP THERAPY.

OUR LIVES WERE GOVERNED BY THE TEN COMMANDMENTS, GOOD JUDGMENT, AND COMMON SENSE.

WE WERE TAUGHT TO KNOW THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN RIGHT AND WRONG AND TO STAND UP AND TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR OUR ACTIONS.

SERVING YOUR COUNTRY WAS A PRIVILEGE.

WE THOUGHT FAST FOOD WAS WHAT PEOPLE ATE DURING LENT.

HAVING A MEANINGFUL RELATIONSHIP MEANT GETTING ALONG WITH YOUR COUSINS.

DRAFT DODGERS WERE PEOPLE WHO CLOSED THEIR FRONT DOORS WHEN THE EVENING BREEZE STARTED.

TIME-SHARING MEANT TIME THE FAMILY SPENT TOGETHER IN THE EVENINGS AND WEEKENDS - NOT PURCHASING CONDOMINIUMS.

WE NEVER HEARD OF FM RADIOS, TAPE DECKS, CDS, ELECTRIC TYPEWRITERS, YOGURT, OR GUYS WEARING EARRINGS.

WE LISTENED TO THE BIG BANDS, JACK BENNY, AND THE PRESIDENT'S SPEECHES ON OUR RADIOS.

AND I DON'T EVER REMEMBER ANY KID BLOWING HIS BRAINS OUT LISTENING TO TOMMY DORSEY.

IF YOU SAW ANYTHING WITH 'MADE IN JAPAN ' ON IT, IT WAS JUNK.

THE TERM 'MAKING OUT' REFERRED TO HOW YOU DID ON YOUR SCHOOL EXAM.

PIZZA HUT, MCDONALD'S, AND INSTANT COFFEE WERE UNHEARD OF.

WE HAD 5&10 - CENT STORES WHERE YOU COULD ACTUALLY BUY THINGS FOR 5 AND 10 CENTS.

ICE-CREAM CONES, PHONE CALLS, RIDES ON A STREETCAR, AND A PEPSI WERE ALL A NICKEL.

AND IF YOU DIDN'T WANT TO SPLURGE, YOU COULD SPEND YOUR NICKEL ON ENOUGH STAMPS TO MAIL 1 LETTER AND 2 POSTCARDS.

YOU COULD BUY A NEW CHEVY COUPE FOR $600. . . BUT WHO COULD AFFORD ONE?

TOO BAD, BECAUSE GAS WAS 11 CENTS A GALLON.

IN MY DAY:

' "GRASS" WAS MOWED,
' "COKE" WAS A COLD DRINK,
' "POT" WAS SOMETHING YOUR MOTHER COOKED
IN AND
' "ROCK MUSIC" WAS YOUR GRANDMOTHER'S
LULLABY.
' "AIDS" WERE HELPERS IN THE PRINCIPAL'S
OFFICE,
' " CHIP" MEANT A PIECE OF WOOD,
' "HARDWARE" WAS FOUND IN A HARDWARE
STORE AND
' "SOFTWARE" WASN'T EVEN A WORD.

AND WE WERE THE LAST GENERATION TO ACTUALLY BELIEVE THAT A LADY NEEDED A HUSBAND TO HAVE A BABY. NO WONDER PEOPLE CALL US "OLD AND CONFUSED" AND SAY THERE IS A GENERATION GAP... AND HOW OLD DO YOU THINK I AM?

I BET YOU HAVE THIS OLD LADY IN MIND...YOU ARE IN FOR A SHOCK!

READ ON TO SEE -- PRETTY SCARY IF YOU THINK ABOUT IT AND PRETTY SAD AT THE SAME TIME.

THIS WOMAN WOULD BE ONLY 59 YEARS OLD!

Hope u all enjoyed it....

Truly enjoyed.

Seeing the great differences of time had changed. And that can be scary to sit down and contemplate what the world has becoming.
One of my favourite teachers had once told me something similar 24 years ago. She was 50 years old then. She said that the world is changing every second and this will never never stop. I had lost touch of her 5 years ago when her son wrote to me saying that she had succumbed to poor health and asked me not to write anymore. Too bad that shes so far away and I could not visit.

Reading this blog triggers my thought on her and her teachings.

Hi Serene,

glad u enjoyed it. and i know the feeling that you are talking about..as they say...the only thing constant in this world is change...for better or worst.

We are all like on a fast rushing river and the scenery changes every second and we bob along for the ride and when we look back, we feel very scared as things change so fast...and we wonder what the rushing future holds for us. we can contemplate but can we be ever ready for it? that in itself is a scary thot!

when i was reading the article, i couldn't help but reminisce about old Singapore...u know the ones where you could buy an ice-cream for 5 cents...play marbles with the kampong boys...we used to be scared hmmm....am feeling old today

I am sorry to hear about your teacher...the good ones always leave a lasting impression...

take care

YUP! The world is changing so fast that it's astonishing.

Now the law says that people are banned from buying alcohol under the age of 18. I wonder if government can pass a new law to banned from internet under the age of 18. Hmmm.... otherwise, I have to think of some ways to refrain my kids from exploring sites like AdultFriendFinder.

Hee Hee....

Thanks for the sharing... I can only say that it's scary to think too deep into it.

Make it your challenge.... turn me ON!!

Hi HLC,

Yah...it is scary alright...and it would get worse when the kids grow up and start talking in jargon which we may not understand.

u are a IT expert mah....u must teach us how to do something so that only we can come into AdultFriendFinder and not the kids ...any way to have a code or something....i am quite an IT idiot in case u didn't know...

Lund0069,

Can go to the net and blog certainly cannot be an IT Idiot, however no matter how you protect your system from your children, if they were IT incline, they will find their way.

Well you can put in software or equipments to block all over the place, but that will also lock yourself out as well. The best thing which I can see is not to do it right in front of your kids if you don't want them to be curious. Thereafter the rest will most certainly be how you manage them while they are growing up.

You are most welcome.

Its like history, cycles of stories which will replay and react with different times and people.
I never stay in kampongs but had friends who stayed there. Remember all the good o'days when I would hang out with them. Play simple things like marbles and stones. Or swim in rivers. And now? Cannot even see kids playing such things anymore... maybe possible to catch a few sights if travelling along countryroads of Malaysia and Indonesia.

I missed licking the colourful iceballs on a hot sunny afternoon.
