There's No Place Like Home

Last Friday evening we finally had some much needed rain. Unfortunately, no amount of rain would be able to save the corn. It’s been dead for sometime now. In fact some farmers have already started harvesting it.

However, after the storm, I was looking out the window and saw the golden hues of the sun shining through the trees. Of course I needed to investigate, I looked to the east and there was a beautiful rainbow. (The pic was taken from my back deck)

It got me thinking about the Wizard of Oz. Dorothy and her friends were in search of something they didn’t think they had, but they all felt they needed.

Cowardly Lion: I'd be brave as a blizzard...
Tin Woodsman: I'd be gentle as a lizard...
Scarecrow: I'd be clever as a gizzard...
Dorothy: If the Wizard is a wizard who will serve.
Scarecrow: Then I'm sure to get a brain...
Tin Woodsman: A heart...
Dorothy: A home...
Cowardly Lion: The nerve!

It wasn’t until someone pointed it out to them that they realized they already had what they were looking for.

Blogville is like Oz, well at least to me. It’s a place where we go to find something we’re missing, or we think we’re missing.

Just like the Scarecrow, Tin Woodsman, Cowardly Lion, and Dorothy, I have found my brain, my heart, my nerve, and my home.

A Brain

Scarecrow: I haven't got a brain... only straw.
Dorothy: How can you talk if you haven't got a brain?
Scarecrow: I don't know... But some people without brains do an awful lot of talking... don't they?
Dorothy: Yes, I guess you're right.

The Scarecrow stated he had no brain, that he was only stuffed with straw. But, when faced with adversity, he was able to find the words needed to get through the situation…

Apple Tree: What'd'ya think you're doing?
Dorothy: We've been walking a long ways and I was hungry and... did you say something?
Apple Tree: She was hungry! Well, how would you like to have someone come along and pick something off of you?
Dorothy: Oh dear! I keep forgetting I'm not in Kansas!
Scarecrow: Come along Dorothy. You don't want any of those apples!.
Apple Tree: Are you hinting my apples aren't what they ought to be?
Scarecrow: Oh, no! It's just that she doesn't like little green worms!

Blogville has made me realize that I too have a brain. I just need to learn how to use it for things that matter.

A Heart

The Tin Woodsman was supposedly built without a heart, but he showed Dorothy and his friends more heart then any other character. He was caring and sensitive to their needs. When time got rough, he was able to follow his heart to do what was right.

Wizard of Oz: A heart is not judged by how much you love; but by how much you are loved by others.

Blogville is a beating heart to me. Plus, I feel like I’ve found my own heart.

The Nerve

The Cowardly lion was afraid of his own tail.

Cowardly Lion: Courage! What makes a king out of a slave? Courage! What makes the flag on the mast to wave? Courage! What makes the elephant charge his tusk in the misty mist, or the dusky dusk? What makes the muskrat guard his musk? Courage! What makes the sphinx the seventh wonder? Courage! What makes the dawn come up like thunder? Courage! What makes the Hottentot so hot? What puts the "ape" in apricot? What have they got that I ain't got?

I have found the courage to tell my story. Few people know what I have been through in my life. Just like the cowardly lion, I have been afraid of my own tail (tale) at times. You have made me realize that I have the courage to face life as it comes and not be afraid.

A Home

The only thing Dorothy wanted was to go home. She realized that the only place that gave her true happiness was with her family.

Dorothy: Well, I - I think that it - it wasn't enough to just want to see Uncle Henry and Auntie Em - and it's that - if I ever go looking for my heart's desire again, I won't look any further than my own back yard. Because if it isn't there, I never really lost it to begin with! Is that right?

Blogville has become like a home to me. You are my second family. It’s not my own backyard that I have to look no further, it’s my own computer monitor!

Additional quotes from the Movie/book

"All the same," said the Scarecrow, "I shall ask for brains instead of a heart; for a fool would not know what to do with a heart if he had one."

"I shall take the heart," returned the Tin Woodman; "for brains do not make one happy, and happiness is the best thing in the world."

"You have plenty of courage, I am sure," answered Oz. "All you need is confidence in yourself. There is no living thing that is not afraid when it faces danger. The true courage is in facing danger when you are afraid, and that kind of courage you have in plenty."

"No matter how dreary and gray our homes are, we people of flesh and blood would rather live there than in any other country, be it ever so beautiful. There is no place like home."

It has been along time since I have been in to visit Love - or much of anyone's for that matter. But, regardless, you often stopped to say hi - THANK YOU!
This was an AWESOME post - I am intigued by the way your thoughts put that all together - GOOD JOB!
I too came looking for something I thought I did not have. But, I found that what I was looking for was not what I needed. Blogland gave me a new direction to explore - and showed me that what I already had was even better than what I thought I lacked.

Thanx again sweetie, fort
