Another Discouraging Baseball Season

My favorite team (the Baltimore Orioles) is having its ninth straight losing season. From 1966 through 1996, the Orioles were one of the most consistently good teams in Baseball. They were perennially in the playoff hunt, going to the World Series 6 times from 1966 through 1983, winning it 3 of those 6 times. Through what was once considered one of the best farm systems in the Majors and key trades, they boasted such greats as Brooks Robinson, Frank Robinson, Boog Powell, Dave McNally, Mark Belanger, Jim Palmer, Mike Cuellar, Pat Dobson, Paul Blair, Don Baylor, Dave Johnson, Rich Dauer, Mike Flanagan, Steve Scott, Doug DeCinces, Mike Mussina and Cal Ripken. There were years where half the American League starters for the All-star Game were Orioles. But under the ownership of Peter Angelos, their farm system has deteriorated into one of the worst in the Majors and they haven't had a winning season since 1997. Altough I have to admit that the Orioles poor showing again this year was not unexpected. They are in dire need of pitching and did nothing during the off season to land any quality starters (Kris Benson was doing well but now may be spending much of the remainder of the season on the DL ) or relievers (they let go of better relievers than the ones they added). Too bad you cannot fire an Owner. At least my home town Astros are still in the hunt for a playoff spot. The Rocket is back, and if the rest of the team can provide him the run support, he should be able to help them get into the Series again.

True, Cubs fans do have much more to complain about.
