sprawl

The topic (well, one of them) of discussion this
morning was a project called "Downtown Storrs,"
which (to inform those of you unfamiliar with
the area) is a phrase I can't say with a straight
face. Anyhow, the town of Mansfield decided, in
its infinite wisdom, that it should enliven the
area around UConn by knocking down a bunch
of buildings, paving over the local watershed, and
putting up a square block's worth of locally owned,
botique-type stores, in hopes of luring the
local college kids into spending their (really
their parent's) money in town. Nevermind that
all the college kids go home every weekend b/c
there's fuck-all to do out here in cowtown; never
mind that college kids don't buy wicker baskets
and lace doilies, regardless of where they shop;
never mind that the vast majority of locally owned
businesses in town (I'm being generous calling it
that) have failed in the last 5 or so years.

I think my favorite part of the discussion was the
locals who work in Hartford all saying "Damnit, I hate
this sprawl," or some variation of that. Um, maybe
you'd live near your job if you hated sprawl? Just
sayin'. Ok, the proposed "Downtown" thingie isn't
exactly sprawl, but it's sort of related, and a stupid idea.
