A First

Today I go shooting with a friend at a shooting range frequented by this state's best officers, national, state, county and city, for south-central Wisconsin.
This is the first time I will ever shoot a handgun, a .357 magnum, formally owned by an officer from his private collection. I went out bought a case, cleaning kit, and a lock for the gun. I took apart and cleaned the gun, it wasn't filthy but more dirty than I thought it would be considering it was owned previously by an officer.
I am ambidextrous, but prefer to shoot with my left,my left hand is stronger and can pull the trigger without pulling back the hammer. The gun is right-handed, so I will have to shoot with my right but pull back the hammer.
This is going to be a learning experience for both of us. He has a semi-automatic 9mm and has never loaded or shot it.
LOL, we are the last two people who should own guns. Here is to a day of fun!!!!!!!!!!!!!

But isn't it a nice country we live in where we have the 2nd amendment?

I wouldn't mind joining you sometime...but I don't own one yet myself...I was kinda taking a wait and see on the conceal carry legislation, not that it was going to really change my decision one way or the other.

Thanks to Diamond Jim tho...we don't have it.

oh my, I don't think I could ever fire a gun. Just seems way too dangerous for me to handle a gun, even if trained properly. Hope you had fun!

We had a great time! It wasn't what we had expected and my left hand is sore from the recoil of the gun. It was very loud, even with the muffs. And I really didn't expect 2feet of flame from the end of the barrel. I need to use less powerful loads, that will cure the recoil problem and the sore hand, lol. I do need to get another gun to enjoy the full hour, though. Three rounds and the gun was ready for cleaning, the empty cases began to stick in the cylinder, making it hard to empty.

Digdug, thanks, we did have a great time. I wish you a wonderful weekend!

IT, I'd enjoy you joining me sometime! I love Wisconsin gun laws. I am originally from IL and if I still lived there, I would have to get a card just to own one. Here in WI,as long as I am not a felon, I can own one as a resident,no card needed. We do need to be checked out to buy a gun, though, but that is understandable.

PJ, it was just the two uf us firing on the range, so we felt very comfortable. I asked the proprietor for a little instruction before we actually loaded the guns, to put me more at ease, I didn't want either of us getting hurt. I also refused for us to use the human shaped targets they had available........neither of us should have the desire to shoot people, and he agreed to the bullseye targets.

.357 can shoot .38

much less recoil, and way cheaper...

"...should own guns..."

This is America. The Revolutionary War kicked off in earnest when the British tried to take guns and powder.

The Second Amendment isn't about military reserves to fight foreign wars, hunting, or "sporting purposes".

It's about a citizen's Inalienable Right to oppose, with violence if necessary, an oppressive government.

Just because we're the country on the Earth that's LEAST likely to need that right exercised any time soon, I think it's a right that needs to be exercised regularly if only to show potentially dangerous politicians that there are too many of us to oppress.

9mm is WAY less recoil, even in +P+ loadings, than a .357 unless the .357 is loaded down to .38 like rounds. Then it's foolish, just use .38 cases or rounds, way cheaper, unless you're going to shoot a lot. Then use the .357 cases (longer...) to protect the cylinder from erosion from the hot gases where the .38 would leave it exposed.

Wheelguns are cool, but I prefer semiautos. They got a bad 100 years ago, but the recent models are sooooo reliable (like 10,000 rounds with no cleaning...) that unless you like the aesthetics of the revolver, it's not a practical choice. IMNSHO, of course...

Sorry, bit of a "nut" here... Don't get to exercise that part of my brain, living in the most liberal county in a liberal state...

Oh yeah, CONGRATS on going to the range!!! I haven't had quality range time since last fall. Too much stress, chaos in my life.

Chaos... I felt I had to move all my guns to one storage location, all my ammunition etc to another. Just a for instance.

Yeah, I need another vacation...

funinic, I understand your situation. Thanks for posting to my blog and I wish you a less stressful life!

BTW, my gun has a turning trigger lock, the case locks, and there is a padlock on it. Even though the ammo is in the case with the gun, it will take a few minutes before I can get the gun loaded. A safety precaution for the quick tempered and overly stressed, lol.

Nate, I had fun, too. I always like learning new things. I will always have respect for the power and the danger of the gun. Even in my anger I would never be able to harm anyone. Watching the show on Pantera on VH1, proved it to me. I care too much for the people who may be left behind, even though I do not know them. I cry now thinking of his dad, brothers and friends. So, no human shaped targets for us,we are not in the military or any law enforcement so we have no need for those targets.

Just reread my comment... Must have been in a bad mood that day to light off so quick.

Weird storage arrangements are to protect me from foolishness of others. Like I said, I live in the most liberal county in a liberal state. Not a good place for gun owners to be in the least stressful of times.
