one of my favorite jokes

I first heard this joke from a friend who used it in a Toastmaster's speech on humor. Reading my version will, I'm sure, pale in comparison to his actual telling. Nonetheless... here is one of my favorite jokes, the talking dog joke.

On his way home from work a man sees a sign in front of a house which reads: talking dog for sale, inquire within. Curious, the man stops and rings the doorbell.

"Hi, the sign says you have a talking dog for sale?"

"Yes, we sure do. He's out back behind the house. Walk around and see him for yourself, ring the doorbell again if you're interested."

The man shrugs incredulously but walks back around the house anyways. Sure enough, there's a dog. "You can talk?" The man asks.

"Yep." The dog replies.

"So what's your story?"

The dog looks up at the man and begins, "Well, I discovered my talent as a pretty young puppy. I didn't want to waste my gift so I decided to work for the government. I joined the CIA and I was their top spy for years. I would travel the world sitting in on important meetings of foreign heads of states, all the while listening in on their conversations. They never suspected a dog would be eavesdropping and I uncovered tons of secrets.

"But... eventually the jetsetting lifestyle wore down on me. Dogs don't live forever and I wanted to settle down. So I left the CIA and started working at the local airport doing undercover security work, mostly wandering around near suspicious characters listening in. I uncovered some incredible dealings there and was awarded a batch of medals. Had a wife, a mess of puppies, and now I'm just retired."

The man is amazed. He goes back in and asks the owner what he wants for the dog.

The owner says, "Ten dollars."

The guy says, "This dog is amazing. Why on earth are you selling him so cheap?"

The owner replies, "He's such a liar. He didn't do any of those things."
