Smack Me under the Missile Tow

I try to avoid being too blatantly political - it isn't a chapter in "How to Win Friends and Influence People," so I tend to leave it alone except in face-to-face discussions.

Do you sense a big but coming?

BUT...

The various reactions to the announcement last week by North Korea that it intended to test a missile capable of hitting the West Coast of the US had many scratching their heads.

Veep Cheney, whom some accuse of being a bit trigger-happy, urged restraint in our approach. Leaders on the left were less cautious, suggesting that we should blow the missile up on its launch pad.

Has the whole world gone mad?

No, there is a very rational explanation to this whole thing. I believe both sides correctly calculated that the missile had just enough range to take out the San Francisco area. If California's electoral votes were cut roughly in half, who would benefit?

One might also argue that the North Koreans have done a great deal of posturing, and don't have the technical capacity to change a tire on a ten-speed bike.

Regardless, the missile went limp less than a minute after launch ... a situation I have sometimes faced myself.

VCF -

I'm good at titles; it is the details that follow that cause me grief. But isn't it nice that the people of N Korea got a 4th of July fireworks show?

Well, at least there was some kind of holiday celebration...
