After the Great Inventions

the maps had to be redrawn,
what was land became sea and was gone,
what was rich became poor
and lonely as melting ice.

A great grey bird flew
but couldn’t find Nebraska,
the white-suited American
or his shaded window Cadillac.
The stars rescued the migrant.
People talked about lost cities
and the new eon.

Who would come to Chu Berry
Resurrection Hall and listen to a singer
swing off New Orleans blues and sip warm beer?
