Valentines

As a kid, the school system forced upon us the exchange of Valentines. They rewarded you with a party at the end of your school day. You had to send a Valentine to each child in your class. They of course provided you with the list. It always took me forever to get this chore done. I would sit with my Valentines and analyze, even as a kid. I would seperate them into piles, based on what they said. I would stare at my list and think what I wanted my valentine to say to that person. My current crush was always the first one. I would pull out one of every kind and set these off to the side. Then I would move on to my current bunch of friends, those were easy. Then it was left to the ones you knew, but didn't hang with. The ones that were left were the ones you really wouldn't ever know. I of course always did this in pencil, leaving me the choice if I changed my mind. I did this several times. My daughter still is of the age where she sends Valentines. She does not ponder over which ones to send and to who. This year she attached candy to every one. I envy that. She's straight forward. If she likes you, you'll know. My son is older, doesn't have to do the dreaded Valentine thing. He has a girlfriend this year. And with our help,(our money, our time, and our suggestions) he bought his first Valentine gift. A big step for a young man. So this all leads me to several questions - How did you pick your Valentines? How do you pick your Valentines today? What do valentines mean? Do they mean anything at all?

I remember this dreaded school ritual. I hated sending them to everyone... it felt so hypocrtical even as a kid. Not only sending them... but getting a valentine from someone I knew didn't care about me. Today I think of Valentines day as a non event... and I do all I can to not think about it. For the ones I love... I should show them every day without the reminder. I don't need someone to tell me when to care.

This is my daughters 1st time doing the Valentines Day ritual, for that I am excited for her. But at the sametime I to remember sitting and analyzing which cards to send to who and if I was sending the right card to someone who I didn't want to get the wrong idea. Now being recently divorced the only ones that I care to let know that I care are my daughter, my mother, and my sister. But like elysianpleasure I do this everyday!

Dang Happy, I can't believe that you are an analytical too. What you did with the Valentines was exactly what I did too. Sort them all out, match things, WOW!!!!
