A simple gift for me

In high school I always ran with an older crowd. So looking back I can say my senior year was certainly more quiet and unenventful, but I still have fond memories. It was Christmas time. I was shopping at the mall. I wasn't alone. I see a mall Santa on his break, walking through the mall. Santa sees me and flips me the bird. I'm completely shocked by this. Remember thinking "I didn't see that." Santa keeps following me. Every time I look, Santa flips me off. Of course the people I'm with don't see, don't believe me. It bothered me for days. Fast forward now it's summer time and I'm out at a store. I see an old friend that had graduated ahead of me. I of course comment that I hadn't seen him in such a long time.
We'll call him Mr. G. Now Mr. G. was a wild one. I used to live near my junior high and high school, so I didn't ride a bus. I walked. Mr. G. would walk with me. He was one of those that hung around after school. He didn't participate in after school activites, but ran with a crowd that did, so he always waited for his ride home. I feel it's always good to add a little background.
So back to our conversation. Mr. G. of course is laughing at me. We do the inevitable catch up thing "What have you been doing, etc." He of course let's me in on the secret of being the mall Santa. After the many questions, he shares with me why. Tells me it's simple. I wanted you to remember me. Every time you see someone that flips you off, you'll now think of me.
Now I can't tell you why specifically that stuck with me. I can say it worked. It could have been the amusement that went with it, or it could be the fact that Mr. G. became a victim of tragic circumstance. Mr. G. died a few months after our conversation. He was always wild and crazy, but he left a simple gift for me.
Rock on Mr. G.
