Pity Party

You all know me. I have three kids. They are wild. They are social. They are active. They are dramatic. All in all they are terrific kids.

Tonight I took my oldest to Karate. I really don't speak to the other parents there. I don't have anything in common with them, besides our kids being in the same class together. I usually stay there for the 45 minutes and wait for my son to get out of class.

The school is pretty small. So in a tiny place like this my kids don't know what to do with themselves. I try to keep them calm, but my kids can only stay still for so long.

After a while my kids were running back and forth having a grand ol' time. I love seeing them happy and playing. Here is when I get the stares from the other parents.

They wisper to thier better halves about me and my kids (which I could care less about what they are saying). I overheard the one woman say "Can you imagine having a little one again?" Now in this day and age I know that having a larger family is pretty much unheard of (I mean hell, who can afford more than two kids now anyway).

But the looks that people give is what gets me. They look at me with pity in thier eyes. Almost like they are thinking "That poor woman".

I despise these looks because I am happy with my life and family. I love the chaos. I love the drama. I love the activeness.

Yes I am beat by the end of the day having three kids, but I wouldn't have it any other way. And to get these "pity" looks when you can plainly see that I am happy, well it just gets under my skin.

I'm familiar with these looks...when I was a 24 yo single parent I received LOTS of these looks. Although I don't want more children of my own (I have 2 teenagers) I still enjoy watching little kids having fun and laughing. Enjoy your kids and try not to worry about the looks and the comments.

Thanks Caress. Your words actually made me feel better about the "looks".

i am very famaliar with those looks also. when my kids were all younger and we would all go out together it was very funny watching people watch us. we were a small army. but like you i loved the chaos and the energy. my kids are well behaved but they are still kids and they enjoy life.

If only people looked at the kids and thought that they could use that much energy and happiness.

There's nothing better than watching kids play. They are so uninhibited...and unaffected by what other jerks are saying. Just let them be kids....and enjoy it! It's over way too quick!

firestarter665 replies on 6/27/2006 3:39 pm:
I wouldn't stop them from being kids. I just love to see them happy.

(What the fuck is this shit..?? *rolls eyes*)

wow. Only having one kid I never experienced that. I never in my dreams would have expected that kind of reaction from people if we had more.
Sorry that you have to put up with that. Not hearing the tone or knowing the age of the people speaking I can't say for sure but the comment about "can you imagine..." might not have been mean. They might have been acknowledging the energy it takes to raise young kids; energy they don't have anymore. They would find it hard to keep up.
I seriously don't understand the looks. What's wrong with having three kids? And aren't kids supposed to run around and have fun? That's what gyms are for.
Try not to let it get to ya.

In some situations, like being in the karate school, I think it is best to keep your comments to yourself. What I mean is that all of us parents have to see each other twice a week and really you don't want to start drama in front of the kids. But I wouldn't expect anything less from a woman with a pole stuck up her ass.

Anybody with kids knows the deal. Any kid that doesn't get wild sometimes, to me, is not normal. Three is a handful though God bless ya!

You would think anyone with kids knows the deal. But you get the parents with just one kid and they are the ones making the comments.

I have to say that I am blessed with my kids.
