Day Off

It was a Tuesday morning, my first day off after working the previous 4. I always sleep with the TV on and awoke to Foxnews and a peculiar site. The south tower of the world trade center was on fire and the newsman was reporting that a small plane had just hit the tower. In the background I could see a small spec inching closer towards the scene and in the back of my mind thinking the firefighters have their work cut out for them on this one. Suddenly the spec materialized into a plane and struck the other tower. I was horrified and knew at once that this was intentional. I grabbed the phone to contact my Chief and he told me to get down there as fast as I could, we are going to NY. I jumped in my truck and sped down the 56 miles to the firehouse in record time, all the while seeing the smoke in the distance and wondering what awaited me. By the time I got there the first tower had collapsed and the Chief was asking for volunteers, all 12 of us said yes and we responded with a ladder truck and an engine. On the way, the second tower went down and we were sent to a staging area by Shea stadium. Later that afternoon they requested manpower and 8 of us responded to the scene. Words cannot describe the things that I saw as we searched through the ruble the next 3 days, in 12 hour shifts, and in all that there has to be someone alive, shouldn't there be?? Needless to say, we found no one, only parts of the once normal everyday individuals that never knew what hit them. I can only hope that few of them suffered before succuming to the weight of the structure around them. This changed me from then on, live every day like it's your last and always explore your every whim.
