Love's a Risk

What to do .. nothing. There is no "fail-safe" - to love is to risk.

I remember watching my little boy going off to school, he seemed so vulnerable. I wanted to protect him from the moment he awoke till the moment I tucked him safely in his bed. A kinetic worry that filled my mind with a nagging concern daily. If I went to the big front window once , I went a "thousand" times ! My eyes narrowed with concentrated focus on the road ...nothing moved (save my falling heart). Finally, his little self would appear, his carefully arranged backpack now slung carelessly across one shoulder.. running, never walking; in a head long, happy drive to home, .. to me ! All was right with the world !! (for an hour)

Nothing changes about the depth of concern and therefore the worry you experience when you love someone or some thing, be it romantic, platonic, benevolent, or kinship, the deep, tender, ineffable feeling of affection and solicitude we experience when loving; all require trust or risk. Thin ice indeed .. but, with eyes wide open, you must "keep on keeping on" .. hay, the water ain't so cold.. ask me; I know. Certainly not as cold as life without love.
