The Potted Plant

The Potted Plant
A nameless plant sits on
a table by a windowsill,
Pink buds hang from
long green vines.

I looked to that long ago
when I was alone
For a glimpse of life
growing wild and free
yet contained in a pot before
My eyes.

I touch the textured vine
and feel how fleshy and cool it is.
In many ways I still envy that plant.

I watered it you see
Because that is what
you do to a plant.

That plant grew from a
Tango in the Night and
Tunnel of Love on vinyl.
So did I, I guess.

A fitting way to begin
an American life, I think.

But that plant is dead.
So is that girl and
so is her mother.
I thrive on Jim Morrison
and Arthur Rimbaud
And I know that too is a phase.
I really should buy a new plant.
