Wheely Pete

The last weeks I have been very busy with a large project which starts at the beginning of July. Appr. three times a week I am giving wheelchair basketball clinics to primary schools in Amsterdam. Every time I have appr. 20-30 kids per clinic and there are 3-4 clinics on a school per day.

The day starts with loading my small van with the wheelchairs. This is a time consuming job as there have tob e 20 chairs loaded and 40 wheels to match the chairs. Then, all the dutch fooks know that, I have to join the traffic jam towards Amsterdam. A bloody distance of 20 km takes me 1.5 hrs before I can do the reverse job at the school.

Wheelchairs unloaded, wheels mounted and there we go. Kids running towards the chairs and trying to get there at first so others should sit at the benches, but smart Pete knows that the teacher will be yelling first, to make them sit on the benches.

After the introduction I always make the girls sit first in the chairs (must be polite ) and then comes the tricky start, because I have the boys pick a girl to have them do the different practices. Now I already see the first fights about girls .

Exercises like moving, turning, dribbling with the ball, passing and then finishing off with some games make them all very eager for this sport. And all find it very attractive to play. Reason for it is that none can stand out from the beginning as they are all new to this.

And after the clinics my job with loading, drive home and unloading starts again. It is rewarding to have this done and make kids aware about people who are disabled still being able to play an energetic sport as wheelchair basketball.

Still 20 schools to go in the next weeks before the real event starts.

Have a good weekend

All that loading and unloading sounds like hard work !!!!

I`m sure you will have a great time. When i did my training we met up with a wheelchair basketball team and tried to have a game. I spent most of my time on my back on the floor. It was great fun and gave us future therpists a great insight into the possibilities out there for people using wheelchairs for their mobility.
Great job.
