She had to ask

Yesterday, someone whose blogging voice sounds an awful lot like champagnechaser asked; "What's The Rock Mobile?"

Silly girl.

The Rock Mobile was a 1973 Buick Century. It was purchased for me in 1986 by Hank (my Mother's live-in boyfriend) for $150 at a car auction run by a friend of his. It had a two-toned color pattern: rust and bondo. But, it ran. And its 8 cylinder engine was a power rush like any proud, gas-guzzling 1970's American automobile should be!!!

At the time, my mother worked for a company that made signs. Small signs for office building doors - large signs for billboards. Any color, pattern or style you'd like.

One day - probably after letting her borrow my Guns & Roses Appetite for Destruction cassette (at her request) we had an idea: What if we plaster the exterior of my car with the names of all the bands I was into? It was pure genius! I quickly made my list.

Soon after, my 1973 rust-bucket Buick Century was transformed into The Rock Mobile! The final tally had over 20 band names on my car. Everything from Iron Maiden, Metallica and Judas Priest to Bon Jovi, Poison and Y&T. The car was legend in my small home town - until it died a year and a half later. The transmission gave out. I continued to drive it, sans reverse and with borrowed plates for as long as I could. But alas, she finally just stopped.

My two favorite memories of The Rock Mobile:

1) Being held down by two buddies while a third ripped Bon Jovi off the hood.

2) Being asked by a cop while stopped at a cross walk if I was a Judas Priest!

ps - The photo to the left is my only tangible memory of the car. It was taken by a fellow hs student for her photography class.

Ah, Its you again, Your Angel Feathers and your Blood Stains...

I have to ask...Did the car ever grace a Def Leppard sticker? I just love to hear you talk about your youth. It reminds me of my youth and brings back the happiest of memories for me. Ahh, to be sixteen again and know what I do now!...

Holy crap! I just clicked on the smiley key and there is a shit load of new choices...

Are you kidding me??? Def Leppard (in proper text) in the biggest, brightest yellow print smack-dab across the top of the front hood!!!! It practically glowed!

Ah yes, 16. No, wait, I was a pathetic dork then! Well, not much has changed, I suppose!

I had a car that will always hold a dear memory in my car. It was my 1979 Volkswagon Rabbit. It was my partying car. At any given time you could find empty beer bottles and cans scattered through it. It had an okay stereo and I literally ran it till it had to be pushed into the car lot for a trade in. LOL

I never named it. Unless you want to call it The Party Car.

How 'bout The Party Mobile?

Those old, early rides will always be the best. And, when you needed gas money, you could just return all the empties for spare change!!!

Yes, I surrounded myself with cool toys to cover up the fact that I was a dork. Not a geek - like you - but a dork!

My mom drove a 1972 Mercury Montego MX when I was learning to drive and first got my license. Oh man, I loved that car. It had a 402 in it and could haul ass. I remember about a year after I'd been driving it hearing her say to my dad that the tires they bought about 6 months before must not have been very good because they were wearing out already. Bless her heart, she never did figure out what was wrong with those tires.

Have tongue, will use it. Repeatedly.

I'm hardly a "car guy." I can barely differentiate between all the gadgets under the hood. But, I know that the glorified go-carts we drive today pale in comparison to those old road-raging beasts!! The kind that went 0-75 with just an odd glance at the accelerator. The kind that gave whiplash a new definition. And yes, the kind that ate new tires for dessert!

Ah, memories....

Pretty phucing cool dude, but I just gotta know what did you say to the flatfoot? Are you Judas' Priest?

docdirk replies on 7/21/2006 6:50 pm:
Since the kind officer was already annoyed with me - I nearly ran down a pedestrian in his cross walk while I fiddled with the cassette player - I simply responded with a respectful; "no sir."

I seemed to garner a lot of sideways glances from the boys-in-blue while driving that car!

They ripped Bon Jovi from the car, lol, that's what friends are for!

docdirk replies on 7/21/2006 6:51 pm:
They were actually only successful in ripping off the little diamond figure between the "Bon" and the "Jovi."

That's what lazy friends are for!!!

That's so cool. My mom held onto the Buick Le Sabre - the one I put thru the garage a few years earlier - until shortly after I got my driver's license when she traded it in for station wagon. Still a few boys bought me gas for it -- I beat them fair & square in drag races, collect on my $20 bets, gas up and have movie money and spending money for the rest of the week. Sometimes, I'd even get 3 or 4 guys betting I couldn't beat friends of theirs.
