My Best Mother's Day Ever

OK, so Mother's Day was last week. And, in case you're wondering, I am not a mother myself. Probably never will be. And, on top of it all, I consider the Holiday to be nothing more than a Hallmark money-maker. Regardless: Today was the Best Mother's Day ever.

Last week, as a gift to my mom, I purchased two tickets for the Connecticut Sun's opening day game. If you're not familiar, The Sun are Connecticut's WNBA team. Neither my mother nor I are a women's basketball fan. But, I figured it would be a pretty cool thing for her and I to do together - have a night on the town, mom and son, spending quality time, etc.

The Sun play their home games at the Mohegan Sun Arena... which oddly enough is located in The Mohegan Sun Casino. On our way to the arena, my mom gestured to a section of the casino where her and a friend once played slots and had a good time. I kept that in the back of my mind.

I must confess now that I am not a casino gambler. What I mean by that is that I do not get involved in table games. I'll wager every weekend on football lines. But table games and slots? Not for me. Nor for my mom either. She just likes getting out of the house.

As The Sun's game winds down, I ask her if she'd like to hit the slots for a bit before we leave. Her reply was along the lines of; "Sure, whatever."

I lead her to my corner of the casino - the one which houses the race-book and the bar with the big screen. We seat ourselves at the 25 cent slots and get to work. I slide a ten dollar bill in the machine and roll two times. On my third pull, I get a feeling. I see symbols lining up. I double down - a whopping 50 cents. I pull. Next thing I know, bells begin to ring and sirens wail. I look at the machine. It tells me I won $675.00!!!

We wait nearly 30 minutes for an attendant to show up. I get my cash and we split. When we get to the car, I nearly have to put her in a headlock to accept any money from me! I reminded her that she sat first and easily could have taken the machine I played. She'll have none of it. Finally, she agrees to let me give her $100. I still feel guilty that I kept what I did!

The best part was sitting, listening to the alarms, watching the faces of the been-here-all-day-and-ain't-won-a-fucking-thing people who cursed me under their breaths! I haven't played the slots in over three years. Three pulls later, I break the machine!

Happy Mother's Day!!!

Ah, Its you again, Your Angel Feathers and your Blood Stains...

That's one of those serendipitous "So Very Good" moments life tickles people with now and then! I'm delighted you and your mom got to have fun together. And don't feel guilty about enjoying an unexpected windfall. Where I live, women's college basketball is a hot ticket with more fans than the men's b-ball and football teams combined.

Women's hoops is a big deal here in Connecticut. As we have no pro team (WNBA aside) we live and die by UConn athletics. Of course, the fickle fans here still root for the UConn women even when they come to play The Sun in opposing uniforms.

Much fun was had by both of us. Thanks for your thoughts.

You know what $575.00 will buy you?

Is that a one-way? Remember, summer is on its way and I hate heat. Can't be stuck in Texas for that!!!

You are a wonderful son, Doc..!!! Can I adopt you? Congrats on your win!!!

docdirk replies on 5/21/2006 5:31 pm:
Adopt? You're younger than my sister!!! Besides, if we were related, I'd feel really weird peeking in the shower to watch you. We'd have to move to West Virginia or something!!

Since your delicate disposition couldn't handle the intense TX heat ... you can put off your trip until the Fall. And, perhaps, you should purchase a round-trip ticket with the option to change your mind and stay here forever.

I bet it made your mom happy to know that you would have given her the money. It is the thought that makes people happy. Glad to hear you all had a good time.
