Smokers Paradise

This was inspired by a fellow bloggers post and is in no way an attack on them, just an observation of mine
The idea of passing a bill to stop smoking in public places has been kicked around more than a few times for here in the burgh. Now, in restaraunts I can understand. As a smoker, it even bothers me when Im trying to eat and someone is just puffing away across from me. But I use common curtesy myself, I get up and leave or just wait while others are eating.
But in bars this concept is rediculous!! Drinking and smoking go hand in hand for our subculture. And for those who complain about smelling when they get home guess what, its a fucking bar! You are supposed to smell bad and feel ill when you get home. What do you expect? To go to a place with scented candles and come home smelling like cotton candy?!! I...think....not.
The best is the campaigning on the spot. For instance, I was out drinking a few weeks ago and was crammed into the bar trying to get a drink. There were people jammed all around me trying to show their money to get served next. A woman next to me was being gropped and pushed in all directions. She looked at me and said,
"Excuse me, your smoke is REALLY bothering me" in a very matter of fact snotty way. I gave her a look but politely and quietly put it out. But that wasnt enough for her, had to keep on it.
"You know, I cant wait until you people cant do that anymore indoors!"
I ignore.
"Its offensive and I always smell like shit!"
Smirk(she did smell like shit), but I ignore.
"You know, for every one of those you smoke, I take in twice as much toxins as you do."
I had enough.
"Well then miss, you owe me about $3.00"
"Excuse me?"
I fire it back up, and take a loong drag.
"You are smoking twice as much as me, so you in fact sharing this pack with me then. So you owe me about $3.00"
She turned the other way.
"Yeah, thats what I thought."
Me smoking and even putting it out is such a horrible thing to deal with. But no worries to the pile of vomit that you are currently standing in, or the drunk horny girl whose yelling all about the bar and trying to pull off peoples clothes as she stumbles by knocking over everyone, or even the 10 coke heads jammed into the same bathroom stall trying to solve the worlds problems while blowing lines off of the back of a toilet. OR the fact that you smell so bad the next day because while stumbling back to your car at 3am you pissed all over your feet and not in the alley way.
So yes, we do have a very disgusting and bad habbit that will eventually kill us in terrible ways. And we do not need to be told that whenever we are out trying to relax and have a freaking beer! Please save the speeches and little facts that some people like to save up just for the situation that you are drunk and want to mouth off to someone who's just minding their own.
Im not attacking non-smokers at all so halt the hate mail before it goes. I just get pissed about this in the BAR scene. Not out to eat, not at someones home, and not peoples dating preferences. Those are all legitimate arguments in my eyes. Just leave us the bar man!

I totally agree with you. I too am a smoker. I understand the whole not smoking in resturants thing...actually I prefer the way they have seperate areas in some for smokers and non smokers, but those are even fading out. I don't smoke while I eat, and I don't want someone elses smoke in my face while I eat, but there's that awful time waiting for your food that you feel you could just light one up.

As far as the bar thing goes.....I say way to go on putting that woman in her place. She sounds like she deserved it. And you did it in a rather funny way! Smoking and drinking most definatly go hand in hand. I don't think I've ever been to the bar where there weren't over half of the people in the bar smoking. Maybe that's just around here, I don't know.

No, thats how most of the bars Ive ever been in where. I mean, yeah it sucks when the place looks like someone blasted it with a fog machine. But usually just a nice haze rolling through.

Go on with your bad self, my soul brotha from a different mother. Christ, if they ban cigarrettes then they had better damn well ban drinking too. When have you heard of a family killed in a car accident by a driver under the influence of nicotine?

Yes they are gonna do that over here in Asia too. I heard that they will have this dumb yellow box where all the smokers have to go to smoke. They've also banned it at bus stops here.

cough.. cough.. mmuummmhumm,, hack...trying to see you through the smoke..Just kidding

I'm not a smoker, have asthma, but think it is ridiculous to tell people not to smoke in a bar. It's aprt of the ambiance you come to expect. We can't cut everything out, what would be next? Telling me Starbucks is bad for my health and outlawing my toffenut frappucino?

I totally agree with you. I do smoke but will refrain from smoking in restaurants even if there is a smoking area out of pure respect for those who do not smoke. However, when I go to a bar where the atmosphere is naturally laid back I expect to be able to light a cigarette any time I damn well please.

texas- thanks for the non-smokers point of view on that one. and yes, if that goes what is really going to be next? remember, everyone has an agenda.

JUST- yes the common courtesy for not smoking around food is very cool. but the atmosphere of the bar is too weird without. experienced that in FLA. they have no smoking in bars........its just not natural and werid.....oh yeah, and i have to stand outside with my drink!
