Simple Love Story

Love is the master key that opens the gates of happiness.
~ Oliver Wendell Holmes

There was once a young woman whose spirit had, at one time, been bright, beautiful...shining for all to see. She fell in love and her heart was broken. Betrayal. Lies. Deceit. For nine years she endured and with each new twist of pain, another layer was added to the walls around her precious heart. Her spirit grew dark and cold, and her once vibrant eyes were now dull and lifeless.

Except for when she was teaching.

You see, this woman was a teacher and children were her love, her hope, her survival. In them, she found peace and light again and, for a time, her spirit shone again. But when the classroom emptied, her eyes went cold again.
One summer, she was to take a group of students on a month long trip around the southwest. Among their destinations was Navajo National Monument.
The morning after they arrived at the park, they were to take a ranger-led tour of the Anazazi Indian ruins of the canyon. But the ranger who was supposed to lead the tour was delayed with car trouble and so management asked another ranger to take over the tour group.

Now this Ranger wasn't particularly pleased with this arrangement as he had a deep respect for the canyon and it bothered him to take tours of often disrespectful students to those ancient places. But nonetheless, the Ranger agreed to lead the tour and stood waiting in the parking lot as the group approached, led by the Teacher. She was with her students and doing what she loved and her beauty was radiant. The Ranger found that he couldn't take his eyes off her. The air around her simply seemed to shimmer and dance. Throughout the length of the tour, he watched her. There came a time when the students were doing a solitary activity and the Ranger and the Teacher were left to themselves. Instantly he watched as her eyes grew cold and she withdrew. Being a perceptive man, he sensed a deep pain in her, but felt powerless to do anything and so he simply watched her with compassion in his eyes.

In the next few weeks, events unfolded in such a way that he was brought to Los Angeles, where the Teacher lived and worked. And he was brought to be a teacher at her school. Now, this wasn't an ordinary school and the Teacher lived on the grounds and offered her spare bedroom to the Ranger until he found his own place. As days went by, his interest in her grew, and he watched with sadness as she drifted around the house like a ghost. He took to sitting in the back of her classroom, to watch her come alive as she taught. He fell in love with her in that classroom. And secretly, in her heart, a tiny flame of love and hope began to flicker, although she was too afraid to ever show it.

Every night, the Ranger would sit at her feet and rub the tension and the soreness from her feet and ankles, and he would talk in his soothing, gentle voice of his thoughts...anything that came to mind. And slowly, so slowly, she began to trust this quiet, steady, gentle man and her heart started to peek out from behind it's wall a little bit more each day and she began to fall in love again. He was patient and slow, but unrelenting in his quest to draw her out, to erase the cold flatness from her eyes and he coaxed and wooed her with warm hands and soft words.

In the end, my father's patience won out. He brought my mother's wounded heart back to life and taught her how to trust again. They have stood, unwavering, beside each other in love and partnership for almost 25 years now. I consider theirs to be my favorite fairy tale love story.

Just a reminder on this Valentines Day that fairy tales still can and do come true.
Happy Valentines Day!
