Finding Hope

She gasped for air as another wave washed over her, the salt water stinging her mouth as she inhaled yet another gulp of it into her lungs. She forced her arms to pull her body back up to the surface. Lost in the dark waters of the storm-lashed sea, she fought to stay afloat. What was she even fighting for anymore? There was no hope of rescue here. She was the only one who could save herself, but she was lost and disoriented as the waves tossed her body, trying to suck her down. She fought now only for the sake of fighting. She had nothing left but will, her purpose now only to know that when the dark waters won, she would know that she had tried, that she had fought them until the bitter end. She screamed. She cried. She raged. But never yielded, never begged. Not this time, not again. If she had known which way to swim to reach the shore, she would have struck out with a power born of desperation. But the waves were high and the rain lashed at her face. And the water was so very, very cold.

Finally there came a time when her mind and muscles protested. “What use is it?” they cried, “let go and let it end.” Tears rolled down her face, mingling with the raindrops as she floated on her back, knowing that soon the water would pull her under and it would all be over. She felt her feet begin to sink and sobbed one last time before she disappeared below the waves. Terrified of the absolute darkness below her, she tipped up her head and fixed her eyes firmly on the surface of the water as she sank.

And then she saw it.
A flash of silver across the water. A light on the surface.

Suddenly, something roused inside her breast and she kicked out, reaching for the surface. Not knowing why, just knowing that she had to know the source of that light. Her lungs burned, desperate for air she forced her body upwards, breaking the surface at last. Frantically, she turned....looking, searching for the light. She knew she had seen it, knew that it hadn’t been imagined. And came again. The smallest flicker to her left. For a moment, she simply stared before her heart dared to hope. From somewhere deep inside determination, pride and will rose again and began to burn. She struck out for the light, unknowing, uncaring how far away it might be, only knowing that she had to answer it's unexplainable pull. For hours and hours it seemed, she swam, fighting exhaustion, pain, fear and doubt. Slowly, so very slowly, it began to grow brighter, and the tentative flickers became more and more steady. Her world narrowed to just that light. It was all that mattered. It became her purpose, her focus, her constant. It was hope and guidance, the light in the dark that could lead to her salvation. All she had to do was keep fighting, keep swimming, keep pulling herself closer.
