My Job

I did not choose my profession, my profession chose me. I was born into this profession. You see My great-grandfather in 1902, decided that he would open a farm implement manufacturing plant. Well back then the farming industry was booming. And it was a good business until the late 70’s, when the farming industry started to decline. Up until then the plant treated our family very well. It taught us traditions, like the son’s of the family would work the plant forever. Well on every boys 13th birthday they started their welding career. I was no different, other than the fact I didn’t want what was offered to me. I am now 34 years old, and in one form or another I have been welding, fabricating, machining, for the better part of my entire life.

My job is not glamorous, on the contrary it is quite the opposite. I am a steel worker. And believe it or not I provide a service to each and every one of you reading this. I can also say with a fair amount of certainty, you all take for granted what I do for you on a daily basis. I am not looking for a thanks, or any type of acknowledgement. I am just telling my story, I posted a pic of a wind generator in a previous blog. I do not build the wind generator. I build the steel structure that it sits on. I also build smaller ones. So next time you are driving down the highway and you see STEEL power poles chances are I, or someone from my plant, or sister plants, built them. I also build hose wonderful towers that are built for cellular phone service.

Now with that being said, Mother Nature can dictate my job. For instance, the devastation of Katrina. We worked 7 days a week for months after that in order to produce the poles to get electricity back to those fortunate survivors. We are still producing poles for that area.

Now that we are up to date, I would like to take a vacation this year. I have posted on others blogs that it has been years since I took a vacation. I believe it was Christmas of 96, or 97. I have checked air fares and hotel rates, and financially everything would be a go.

But my main concern is the fact that when I would like to go, we are replacing our biggest press in the plant that I work at. Well the department I work in supplies the rest of the plant with their product. My department is also the one that has the press. Also this is the first week in a long time the overtime went from voluntary to mandatory. I hope I am only over thinking this, BUT…

My job chose me too. Not from family obligations but
it saved me from utter financial desolution 12 yrs ago.
LOL
I think of you everytime I pass a cell or power tower.

I've got all my parts crossed for a vacation for you...
Fingers, toes, arms, legs, eyes, heart...
(don't laugh at the visual, it works for me)

Sometimes.....you just got to do something for you and be selfish. It puts things in perspective and can be that much sweeter.

How many days of vacation do you have saved up? I wouldn't think that they would have a problem with you wanting a vacation after so long since your last one. Just as long as you give them the request far enough in advance to schedule it.

Take the vacation, Cru. You deserve it after the last one being so far back. You'll feel refreshed for it. BTW, Japan is waiting...

The sad thing is that they can deny it, or worse cancel it depending on the situation. And there is not a DAMN thing I, or the Union can do,cause it's in the contract. Oh I use all of my 15 days a year, but only 1 at a time. Other than Thanksgiving week, but that being a holiday they can't say no.

That would be a dream, to get to Japan. But I don't think I could quite get that one financially, without saving for a year. So what's the weather like over there? So I would know when to schedual a trip that way.

Actually, Bud, I *do* think of the people who create all of this before me. I try really hard to let my appreciation run deep, and I know you said you didn't want it, but THANK YOU for your hard work. And true THANKS to all of our farmers too...you come from a line of hardworking people who most usually have a feel for the deeper wisdoms in life.

Steel work is a dangerous job, I know, but I'm here to tell you... a fine bead gains my pleased attention.

Now, when I have the means by which to have my wroght iron fence, I'll know where to come. (What...do you think I would want a white picket fence...Nah...give me STEEL. And just think, your structures, barring accident and tragedy, will outlast us ALL. Pretty amazing!)

I *do* Hope you get your vacation, Cru...LIVE it UP, Babe.
    Where ya gonna go?
Thank you Dysgyzed, I'm not sure where I would go. thank you again

So THANK YOU for all your hard work!
