A simple thank you

A few days ago this letter appeared in an annonymous writers column of our local newspaper. It speaks volumes. Tomorrow is July 4th...say Thank you to someone who has helped us to be able to celebrate this day.

"Last week, while traveling to Chicago on business, I noticed a Marine sergeant traveling with a folded flag, but did not put two and two together. After we boarded our flight, I turned to the sergeant, who’d been invited to sit in First Class (across from me), and inquired if he was heading home.

No, he responded.

Heading out I asked?

No. I’m escorting a soldier home.

Going to pick him up?

No. He is with me right now. He was killed in Iraq. I’m taking him home to his family.

The realization of what he had been asked to do hit me like a punch to the gut. It was an honor for him.

He told me that, although he didn’t know the soldier, he had delivered the news of his passing to the soldier’s family and felt as if he knew them after many conversations in so few days.

I turned back to him, extended my hand, and said, “Thank you. Thank you for doing what you do so my family and I can do what we do.”

As of now I still have friends in both Iraq and Afghanistan so yes its a very important day in my book and never enough thanxs to them.

As a ten year Navy veteran, I give many thanks to the people still serving our country, both home and away. My country means allot to me and I am glad to see that many more people feel the same way. Let's let our representative's in Washington know how we feel and get something going on the Flag amendment to protect this symbol that our people died for.

I got "lamb basted" by someone through a personal email because of this blog. I even though of cutting and pasting it in here, but I won't do that. Apparently the person has a real bad feeling about war...and in a sense lectured me on the reasons, we today are at war. My intent was not to debate the war we are in...nor any wars that our country has been in. It was to say thank you to the soldiers, who have served our country in order to have the freedom we indeed have. My mother and father each had a brother die in war, one in WWII and one in Korea. I lost a very close cousin, and a very dear friend in Nam. I now have two nephews in the military ranks, who have been serving in the conflicts of Afganistan and Iraq. They do not question the motive...they are our armed forces, and they go as they are told... I just say thank you, to them, and to all who bear arms for our continued Independence. "I am proud to be an American where at least I know I'm free and I won't forget the men who died, who gave that right to me. And I'd gladly stand up next to you and defend her yet today, for there ain't no doubt I love this land, God Bless the USA."

Its the people that make those commentsa and thoughts that need to be "removed" from this country let them go live in places like Afganastan or Iraq or Iron to name a few. Or talk to people like an ex G/F that came to the states after the Serb wars where she worried about her kids just walking a few blocks to school and hoping every day they came home alive.......ok ok I'll get off my soap box but people like that just burn me up...Hope all had a fun and safe 4th Chuck
