freakish hotel story

i was at the concierge desk until about 8pm tonight so the first part of this story i got from being told by my coworkers. the end of it i got from being right there and listening, but not being involved.

anyway, it's a long story, but i have to go in order so you can get to the same place i did.

so apparently a woman checked into the hotel without a reservation and got one of the last two rooms we had. it was a smoking room. she paid cash and told my coworker that she had just come home and found her husband in the act of consumating an affair. she was paying cash so he couldn't track her.

she said she had booked a flight for St Kitt's in the morning and just wanted to get some rest. she was from apex, which is maybe 15-20 miles from the hotel. we have a shuttle to the airport and she could leave her car.

she got to her room and discovered that the smoke smell was too bad for her to deal with. she called the operator who said we had only a suite left and it was more expensive. the woman said fine, she'd come to the desk, give us more cash and get keys. so she moved to room 926

Ms 926 only spent about three hours in the hotel. apparently she wanted to take a bath. turns out the tub stopper was broken. maintenance couldn't fix it.

next she tried to make herself a cup of coffee but either she used the coffeemaker wrong, which a lot of people do, or it broke. anyway, it flooded and ran coffee all over. (i'm pretty sure she used it wrong because our coffeemakers do that a lot if you don't put the pot in facing handle directly out perpendicular)

so we sent up housekeeping to clean up and got her some coffee from roomservice

suddenly she appeared at the front desk asking to speak to a manager. this is when i was back at the desk and she asked me this.

she was really mad and asked for refund. told us she had a reservation at the sienna and she had a friend picking her up.

so TT had done the original transaction and she cancelled it and gave the money back, the manager listened and apologized. we made sure she had a ride to the sienna and i recommended she make sure to eat at il palio since it's right there in the hotel and is such a fabulous restaurant. (oddly that cheered her up, turns out she was a travel agent and outgoing guest service makes her happy she said)

a guy shows up and starts talking to her. they head to the front of the lobby.

an apex police officer shows up, walks past them, comes to the desk and asks the way to room 926. we all three pointed to the lady standing at the front door and explained she just checked out and was leaving with her friend.

he looked at them and said "that's not her friend. that's her husband!" and goes to talk to them

he talked to them for a few minutes while the story of the affair was reported to me

then the cop comes back. the couple heads out the door. he tells us how the husband was looking for her because as she left the house she was hysterical and talking about killing herself. apparently she wasn't going to st kitt's at all.

she had come to the hotel to kill herself.

but the tub stopper was broken and the bath wouldn't fill.

and then the coffeemaker made her mad so she quit being depressed.

mechanical failures kept her from reaching the appropriate psychological moment and she failed to take her own life.

freakish

Wow, what a certainly odd sequence of events! It is strange though how just the slightest haphazard moment can make or break a person's life, literally in this case.
