Wire Tappers and other Panty Sniffers

Two bits of news struck me this week.

The first was a story about a young woman who became suspicious that someone had been in her home when she noticed a light was left on upon her return. Rightfully, she decided to video tape her home while she was gone. Sure enough, she had uninvited company - caught on film; going through her underwear draw, trying it on. Hell, she even had the joy of watching the jerk off do what he most likely does best. This is one of the few times you'll hear me say the evidence is overwhelming; unlike my opinion of the Tookie Williams case; see my earlier post "Its So Easy To Kill When We Hate".

It always bothers me when privacy and basic rights of human dignity are ignored. I wonder what kind of sick mind thinks such behavior is appropriate. I wonder if they ever consider the effect their actions have on the targets of such abuse.

Later last week another story in the news caught my attention. This was about our executive branch of government by-passing our proper legal avenues in order to wiretap people suspected of potential terroist activities.

I understand that after 9/11 the world is viewed as changed. The change was not sudden. Our exposure to terroist activity has always existed, without argument it has increased over time. What was sudden was our realization that our government has dropped the ball on the issue. Instead of improving our enforcement of existing processes for protecting the public, our government has mounted an all out assult on basic human rights. I cannot say that the accusations made against the current administration are true, none of us know that. I do know that accusations of civil rights abuse have been prevelent since 9/11.

I don't sleep well at night knowing I have a government watching over me as inept and yet invasive as the current administration. I know there are more effective ways to protect the public than sniffing our neighbor's panties.

I see a distinct paralell between the two stories.

Agree or disagree - I don't care - but I will exercise my right to free speech as long as I still have it.
