The Peaceful Morning After.

The wrath of nature amazes me. Tornado's are the most amazing of them all. The little super cell that passed just north of me yesterday was tracked with a tornado from Ravenden Springs, Arkansas all the way to Caruthersville, Missouri. A good 100+ mile trek. I am not sure of the exact path before the starting point or after the ending point but a 100+ mile swatch of destruction from one super cell storm is rather amazing in my book.

A local law enforcement officer followed it from Lafe to Marmaduke, a distance of 10 miles. He was being broadcast live on 3 local radio stations (sister FM group) and the residents of Marmaduke had plenty of advance warning. The amazing part was, he was announcing that it look like it was going to veer slightly north and east of the city when suddenly the storm made a right hand turn and crashed into the school and proceeded to rip apart the northern section of the city.

Marmaduke,Ark is located in Northeast Arkansas and has a population of 1200 it lies situated within 8 miles of the Missouri "Bootheel". Marmaduke is the second largest City in Greene County. Last night, 50 people were injured, 3 severe enough to be air lifted to Memphis and an estimated 750 people left homeless.

The largest supplier of manufactured homes (Yeppers, trailer houses) in Northeast Arkansas was devastated. (Talk about ironic...). The only factory in town (ARI, American Railcar Industries) Devastated.

This persons eye witness account. You would not believe it. Some amazing things to see in all the devastation though. 1 house had the entire roof and northern wall just gone. It was a child's bedroom and the metal bunk bed was still standing with clothes on hangers hanging from it. One car had three 2X4's driven completely through the drivers side door. Railroad Tanker Cars pushed 100's of feet through muddy fields. Cars and 18 wheelers over turned and wrapped around trees and twisted up with each other. Huge farm tractors and implements tossed around like toys.

One person video taped it from the time it entered the west side of town (the school) and kept the tape rolling as it exited the east side of town (AR. Length of the clip? Less than 1 minute.

That is so fucking awesome to me. Over half a small town wiped out in under a minute. The power and fierceness of mother nature is overwhelming.

I have chased several tornado's in my life. I am intrigued by them. I have been almost struck by lightening as many times as I have almost gotten laid. You know what I mean? Conditions look favorable and then BOOM!!! The guy beside me gets it. I have stood in 85 mile an hour straight line winds holding on to anything I could and ducking crap flying at me. I am as stupid as the dumb asses that work for the Weather Channel. I really do not know why I don't get a job with The Weather Channel so I can go get tossed around by Hurricanes, Yell into the camera, and just prove to the whole world how stupid I am.

But Hurricanes? To me they are not impressive. Tornadoes are impressive, Hurricanes flatten and destroy areas miles in width as they crash ashore. Tornadoes are like surgeons. They can completely clear a house off of one lot and the house beside it not even lose a shingle. Tornadoes can rip the roof and walls from a house but leave a bunk-bed standing with the clothes still hanging from the top rail of that house. I bet a hurricane cannot do that.
Tornadoes can drive a piece of wheat straw through a tree. I bet a hurricane never did that. Tornadoes can also take you to a land beyond the rainbow where little blue birds fly and witches fly around on brooms yelling how they will get you and your little dog Toto too. Oops, sorry bitch, looks like my house landed on your fat ass but thats ok, I doubt you were thinking about putting out anyway. Now I will end up melting your ugly ass sister because she won't put out either. I guess I could fuck the scarecrow but he makes my hay fever go crazy. Talk about allergies....

I grew up in Mississippi. I grew up with a love of tornadoes, the raw power of them, the arbitrariness of when and where they strike, and what they choose to destroy. It is like magic, in a way, how something so mysterious can leave such an enigmatic footprint.

As I grew older, though, I recognized that the lives of those affected will never be the same. I feel for your neighbors, Bard. This is just the beginning.

---Seriously

p.s. Ever wondered what tornadoes sounded like before we had freight trains?

bardicman replies on 4/3/2006 9:14 am:
I have always wondered about the freight train thing. hmmmm

Of course there are the lives of the victims of the storm but luckily there were no casuallties here.

Marmaduke...I thought that sounded familiar. I was at the high school once....basketball manager way back in the day...

Anywho.....fuck a scarecrow?? That sounds kinky.

The thing with toronadoes....most people only have seconds at best to take cover. SECONDS. That's why they can be much more fatal and destructive. Because you really never know when they'll hit. I had to hover in the downstairs bathroom last night for a good 20 minutes....courtesy of the storms here and the sirens. That was a joy.

Oh yeah....and a high rise building downtown had some windows blow out last night. They're not sure if it was from the wind or if a twister did indeed touch down downtown. Weird. Glad to be moving the fuck out of a tornado area next week .

I have to admit tornados are awesome, all that wind and power, and it can be over so quickly.I'm also one of those stupid fools that get out in the weather.I know you don't think much of hurricanes, but there are tornados in hurricanes.I've witnessed them. There's also hail!
Its good to know ya it through ok

bardicman replies on 4/3/2006 9:18 am:
Definately Herestill, I saw hail yesterday the size of softballs. Luckily it was not hard. it was shattering easy against the car or else I am sure it would have knocked the windows out and dented the hell out of my car.

The town I grew up in is a Tornado magnent. I have to admit we did become somewhat complacent about them. I can remember being on a pond fishing one day watching a Tornado in the distance. We just kept fishing because we calculated it to be not too close. But we also understood their power. We had grown up watching people being pulled out and start over too many times. One tornado sat cars on top on telephone wires and poles.

bardicman replies on 4/3/2006 9:20 am:
Peaches, I find myself unafraid and accepting. I hope I never die to regret that decision

When it is storming I am outside in it looking and watching the clouds. I guess if I saw one barreling down at me I would jump into the shelter.

The wrath of nature is definitely awe-inspiring. Since I live in FL, of course I have a healthy respect for hurricanes, AND tornadoes. Hurricanes spawn tornadoes, so both can and do occur. I drove through the Everglades after Hurricane Andrew, (and I do mean the NEXT week, as I was on a cruise and left Miami 6 hrs before he hit), and saw the devastation from both the 'cane and the tornadoes that ripped through a once peaceful habitat. I saw what a Cat5 hurricane can do... I couldn't imagine being pelted by winds in excess of 200mph for hours...

At least with a hurricane, you get plenty of warning. Not with a tornado, though. And if a tornado is headed your way, you don't have a lot of time to get to safety. And if it's an F5? I shudder to think of the total and absolute devastation that will incur. In the movie, "Twister", an F5 was referred to being "a finger of God".

I get very freaked out when I see the sky turn that sickening color of greenish/yellowish/black... tornado sky.

bardicman replies on 4/3/2006 11:51 am:
Bucfannn.. I have not heard what the F/factor of this one tornado was. I am assuming f3. Had it been an f5 it would have been totally god awful for that small communutity. (not like it wasnt anyway.

Bard...

I got it dicked here in CA. All I have to deal with is earthquakes and this volcano I live on the side of. I have never been able to understand, though, why we continue to let people build houses on the Russian River which floods out every single year. Then, we let them go back and rebuild so it can get washed away, again... the next year! Oh well... (My volcano isn't scheduled for another blast for 200+ years, so I guess my odds are reasonable I can get through the next 20 without having rocks raining down on my head.)

Solar... (out of the clear blue of the Western Sky)

Did you know you have a 6X higher chance of getting hit with an asteroid than a bolt of lightning? Now I never have known anyone that got hit by either one. But... I know there are records of any number of people getting their asses cooked by lightning. I ain't never seen any record of ANYONE that got smacked by an asteroid. Have you? Maybe they meant - a steroid?! Makes me wonder if that 200 year thing is for real... *LMFAO*

Tornado's are big brother to Hurricanes....didn't you know that? While a tornado will slam in fast and wreck devastation within minutes, Sister Hurricane comes in, teases, goes back out, makes you almost want her to come in and finish up so that you can breathe again. She seldom acts alone, in fact, she pulls her force from all four powers of the universe...Air, Water, Earth & the Fire of the sky. She is beautiful in her savagery as she whips the oceans up into a foaming spitting fury. Playing them against the vulnerable shore, slamming over and over again. Using the wind to swirl and lift, bending trees that accept her will, having no pity at all on the ones who refuse. While she generally plays along the shores, if she's pissed enough she will travel over the land with fury until she is completely depleted. She will leave in her tempestuous wake millions of people wondering how they will ever pull their lives together again from the water soaked, wind blown wreckage.

She is the spoiled little sister of her brother, the scorned woman of whom legends are told, and whom Hell cannot fathom. Feel her passion. Feel her strength. Feel her Fury.

So dear Bardi, be careful how you "disparage" her...Big Brother might come looking for you and if he isn't appeased he will unleash her and you will see the difference.

I make mistakes, I am out of control & at times hard to handle. But if you can't handle me at my worst, then you sure as hell don't deserve me at my best. ~Marilyn

Having ridden out a typhoon (hurricane in that part of the world) with wind gusts up to 185 mph, I must disagree.... try one, you might change your mind... it was an awesome site to see and live through, the sound alone will haunt you forever... the fact that it can continue at that pace for hours on end fascinates me... never experienced anything like that before, likely never will again.

Apparently the depth of depravity here is bottomless... don't you feel right at home?

Catching up on some posts I missed. LOL

I had one rock my car violently while sitting at a stop light and as soon as the light turned green, I floored it. LMAO Like I could outrun a tornado! But when you see it swirling down the road towards you... it must be a common reaction. The woman next to me did the same thing. LOL

Hurricanes are worse than Tornados. You know why??? Because with a hurricane you get hundreds of tornados. During Hurricane Alicia I saw 2 touch down across the street from my house. Scared the crap out of me but at the same time there was this amazing excitement. I couldn't close the door and hide like a normal person. LOL

I have always loved storms and watching tornado footage. I always thought it would be fun to be a storm chaser.
