Will The Real Generation X Please Stand Up, Mr. Shady?

Generation X has been analyzed and type-cast as cynical and apathetic. But in reality this seems far from the truth. They are a diverse group that defies categorization. Politically, they vary widely in their levels of involvement and party affiliation.

They are in the process of inheriting a country already fraught with debt and weighed down by unmanageable federal programs such as Medicare and Social Security. As a result of their enormous college tuition loans they now face record levels of debt and a daunting job market where the promise of automatic employment is not passed out with the diplomas on graduation day.

Generation Xers are into public service in a big way. A strong community service background is practically a requirement. This involvement goes a long way toward combating the apathetic, Gen X stereotype. But even more important, it brings politics down to a real-world level. It's much more meaningful to see the effects of poverty first-hand than to hear a speech by President Bush or a member of the Democratic Party.

A much less cynical reading of their outlook is that they feel blessed by the opportunities life has granted them, and want to give some of that back to those who have not been so fortunate. It would be nice to think that this feeling is characteristic of all Gen Xers in general.

Many are surprised at how often people are really volunteering. A local shelter for battered women in Williamsburg recently named a young Gen Xer as one of their best volunteers, and a large number of this group are participating in programs for local children on Halloween and Thanksgiving.

And as an added benefit one consequence of this new conformity is that when one person volunteers, they usually bring someone along.

While service organizations and charity work must compete with many other activities in their lives, the growth of their service oriented outlook is becoming a focal point of their daily lives.

Could it be that the whole "Boomer" "Gen X", "Gen 2020" is media and 5th avenue hype?

Portray one as being "into it" and anoither "out" and you have automatice marketing audiences.

I agree whole-heartedly with the idea that community servcie is what binds society. It trenscends all ages, races, politics, religions. It's about giving. I you give you have. Give some of your time and you'll have time. Give a dollar and you have a dollar. Give your love and you have love.

Unfortunately few young parents have a spiritual program they can introduce to their offspring. Presently the majority of our society views spirituality as religion and consequently it is unmentionable in public education.

It's unfortunate parents don't exploit the wisdom of their elders, we're more than willing to share.

Faaadinnnnnggggg Awaaaaaay.........

Will u miss me????

Society is still mixed with all the avarices of life as it was before, and will be again.... as well as the countering forces of charity, compassion, and love.... The current X'ers will continue to develope, as did previous generations, but with the absolute affect of technology, the extreme availability of knowledge, now and developing, and the evolution of societies determined to dominate, as it was in the beginning of time. The interlocking of our world is as obvious to one wanting to see, as is the declining of certain power structures, even within our own society, and country. The X'ers have so many opportunities to advance positively, and just as many ways to miss those same opportunities. Remember, it was the Boomers that paved the way for the X'ers.

I hope this encourages sharing from all generations--with their own issues/struggles. The boomers left a wake behind them and I do think as in any cause and effect relationship that the boomers need to quietly be open to the wake they have created and hear those voices long gone silent.

Its not a beat fest on any generation..mearly Im trying to understand the issues with the after generations which have mostly been silent. SO I want to hear from every one of you-- how it has effected YOUR OWN LIFE, your views in society in general..this post is all about you.

I want to understand. And hopefully others do to. I will be writing more later.

Barbie, I am curious as to "the voices long gone silent." Are you referring to the genX'ers?

I think if you look beyond the front pages of our life, beyond the projected "hot news items" being thrust at our society by a "follow the leader" media mentality, then you will see and hear the voices of three generations, the prebabyboomers (WWI generation still affects our lives, in Congress, and as a voting block, the babyboomers (choke... faaadinnng awaaaay.... can u still see me?) are predominant because of the timing, but that will change, it always does, and the genX'ers are moving into the positions left by the boomers, an inevitability.... The voices of the genX'ers, and their influence on society as a whole has been felt for some time now, and it will progress, and grow... However, the genX'ers will face challenges, like their predecessors, in dealing with the world, in conflict, and in the struggle between the opposing forces of life. This has not ever changed, and never will. The most amusing thing, is to watch the pompous, bragards among them who proclaim their control of the issues, and of life's answers.... for, they are just human, like us, they continue to catch the same colds, flu, and feel the emptiness when love isn't there. The only consistent thing about humanity is that each member of it, whether in the pits of depression, depravity, or manic, and educated, is ultimately seeking one thing, whether they acknowledge it or not, and that is "to be loved, purely, unconditionally, and to feel pure, and clean in that love." The only problem, humanity gives this, only to find it taken away by distrust, or because the party giving is also human, and has the frailties, and same need. Only when we put behind our prejudices, and realize we are all part of the same world, and have the same end needs, will any generation's voice overcome the forces at work here.

May you day be filled with love, if only for a fleeting moment for in that moment, life is more than we imagine, and more than we expect.

Yes I am referring to GenX as the Silent ones. Typically they keep to themselves or other Genxers. Not because they havent tried to make friends with boomers, and now Echo (formerly GenY..now renamed Echo since they are merely a echo of the babyboomers thoughts, actions without an individual identity like X)

Is a scary trend. No more will there be a stand alone identity generation like our predacessors. More than likely, X will take the reighns too late from the boomers not retiring, and Echo will be too large and drown out X, which is a re-hash of the boomers, only this time, Echo is crippled as they have never learned to stand on their own feet and expects everything handed to them when the boomers will not be around and GenX will not give in to those please for a moment.

SO I really doubt unless GenX grabs a foothold with some issues, will influence much as most would rather give up the reighns and be effective in their own microcosm in their area and lives.

But remember love does not make the world go round..power, greed, corruption and money does. Honni I think you are an early Xer.
