Got the T-shirt!

Today, I completed a triathlon. It wasn't pretty, it wasn't fast, but I did it. I finished in 2:30 and was easily the last sprint racer, but I did it. So, my 2005 racing season is complete, with my 2006 racing season starting in about 6 months.

It started off with the 750 m swim - an out and back to a floating orange pumpkin. The water was around 70 degrees and really wasn't that bad, some even went without their wet suit. I used mine as it helps my legs stay near the surface. There was about 30 people in my wave, and after the start, there wasn't any problem with running into people. I was able to stay in stroke for the entire part, so I was pleased with that. As the sun was directly in the path of the pumpkin, I kept following the other swimmers until I finally saw it when I was only 50 m away. Went around it and then headed back into the dock.

Next was the bike leg, the $&%^##* bike leg. The first 1/4 mile was up a steep hill, then down a hill, then across a water spot - unique to the race I heard. Next, another long hill which I didn't make it up - I had to dismount and push my bike up to finish. Then down a long part and into a flat area. At the turn around, it was back on the flat area, then up the long hill. Then down, across the water spot, and then up the steep hill. Again, had to dismount and walk up it. Then downhill to the transition area and get ready for the run.

Finally, the run, which once again, starts off with the steep uphill. After that, it was a trail run with two vista points that were a pain. I really was never able to get into a groove as there was no good flat section to just run, so most of the time it was a jog / shuffle jog / walk.

Overall, I enjoyed myself. One thing that I really enjoyed is most of the racers kept passing over encouragement as you went by on the course. I also enjoyed being able to watch Orion set in the western sky as I showed up at 6 AM to get a decent parking spot and it's still dark then - lol.

Lessons I came away with. I need to stop doing all my running at the track and on the treadmill as I wasn't prepared to do the hills on the course. For the bike, I definately need to get out and do some longer stints, and hit some hills.
