On This Day Many Years Ago

Many years ago on this day, a young girl prepared to be married. She was a dreamer, a little girl who believed in fairy tales. She could tell a story better than anyone...when lacking for a show and tell item in kindergarten, she amused the class by telling them that her mommy was the bearded lady in the circus. Of course, the teacher called that "lying".

She grew up knowing that she was expected to get married. After all, there was no money for college. Her high school graduation present was luggage. She wanted to get married...she wanted two daughters....even better if they were twins. So, this day, many years ago...she was doing not only what she was expected to do, but what she wanted to do.

She was excited...she was beautiful. She had packed carefully for her honeymoon....her first trip out of Ohio alone - well, without her parents. She had had sex...but had never "slept" with a man. Had never cohabited with a man. Had no real idea other than her Dad what a man's habits were. She was excited.

Despite a little rain...the wedding was everything she dreamed of. The church was the one that the two of them had grown up in....that their families had grown up in...and this day, they were the king and queen of that church. Their family, their friends, and the ENTIRE church had turned out to honor their wedding. If she closes her eyes even now, she can see and hear the wedding. She can look into the balcony, and see her grandfather smiling......and it didn't seem strange for him to be there even though he had passed some time ago.

Many years have passed. There were two daughters born...although not twins...close enough together that people often asked if they were. Now there are two grandsons...and another child on the way. There have been many joys, and many sorrows. The king and queen have made many mistakes, and in doing so have hurt each other. There has been smiles, and tears. There has even been many times that this girl wondered what the hell she was doing here and why the hell she didn't just get out. You see, the girl knows what is expected of her. She just keeps trying to get things right. And yes, she still thinks that most of it is her fault.

But this little girl believes in fairy tales. And when she closes her eyes she can "feel" the same feelings she felt that day many years ago. She still believes in happy endings. And when she opens her eyes and looks into the eyes of the one she loves, she sees the same eyes looking back at her that looked at here that day many years ago. She sees the same hands holding hers that placed that ring on her finger many years ago. She sees that he believes in her....but he doesn't believe in himself much anymore. She sees the lines on his brow that the years have brought. She sees him worry about her....about her dying. She still believes that she can wipe away that worry. She believes that she will live....mostly because he needs her to.

You see, this little girl believes in fairy tales. And fairy tales have lots of tragedy...but in the end....they have love and happily ever after. You see, this little girl is me!

Happy Anniversary Darling!

Freelove...you said the word. "Work". Because it is alot of work. Sometimes more than others. Sometimes I work harder at it and sometimes my husband has to work harder at it. But we live in a throw away society.....and it is way to easy to just disolve a marriage. Are we completely happy every day? Absolutely not. Does that mean we should just give up and walk away? Absolutely not. We have a life and a family together....we will continue to "work" on our relationship. And love each other doing it. Thank you for a great comment.

Vatraveler....each day is as beautiful and happy as you make it. I lose sight of that sometimes....but it is my new mantra. My husband tells me he is a fortunate man....and I am a very fortunate woman! We do forget that sometimes though. It is good to be reminded....I guess thats what Anniversary's are for. Love ya!

"You see, this little girl believes in fairy tales.", tells a great deal dear one. Never forget those fairy tales, as they have a habit of showing up just as we need them. And to have a Cinderella or P. Charming to share those tales, after all the years is really more than one has a right to expect.
Blessed are the ties that bind
Far tighter than those of the mind
A simple smile, given with love
will bring on all of Heaven's love
Hands that no longer are steady, but still see
the little things, both for you and me
arms no longer as firm but are still pure
to hold you close, safe and secure

Special love, with hugs, and kisses to a Lady indeed rare in this day and age.
But a love so strong nothing more is needed

A very special day for a very special lady... and her guy. Thirty-five years!!! Wow!

Yes, the fairy tale continues for you Angel... as it should. You summed up so beautifully what your married life has been, and will continue to be I'm sure. If you two were to be remarried, you have written the perfect words to say.

If ever I have known anyone who deserves as much joy in life as possible, that person would be you. You are such a wonderful, funny, charming, witty, caring, loving, and giving a person as I have ever known. Your love of family, husband, and friends comes shining through in everything you do. I wish for you at least thirty-five more anniversaries... filled with love and will be cherished everyday. biggest hugs to you, unlisted
