End of Summer!

For me, the summer is over.

Most of you know that I'm a nurse....and that job never ends. But I also teach medical professionals at a local college. And classes begin today. I took on a heavier load of classes this fall.....which will make my bank account happy.....if I can hold on until October when that first paycheck will come. But, it's going to take a huge bite out of my time.

I used to work at a lake and campground in my teen years, and the end of summer was always so melancholy. Holding on to those last days of swimming.....even when the water was getting cold. Those last campfires and kissing in the fire light. Buying the school clothes and supplies. And that first day of school......

A little scary that first day....no matter what your age. Those kids you worked with and swam with all summer.....now fully clothed....and enscounced in the "school" clicks. Funny how that works. New classes, new teachers....new friends.

And that's how the first day of school is for me now. A little scary.....will they like me? Will I be able to teach them? Will they be nice? Will the stupid copier work?

So, what does the end of summer mean for you?

Do you have any special "end of summer" rituals you go through?

Stay tuned tomorrow.....special day for me.

I used to work at a summer camp and hated to see the end come...that meant I had to go back to school and put up being on the "outs"...Today, I look forward to the end of summer, fall is on the way and winter, not much further behind....snow and skiing will soon be here...yipeee

Skier....I used to love the winter in Ohio. But here in Virginia Beach I just dread it. It is the kind of wet cold that goes through to your bones. And our houses aren't built or heated for the cold. But I haven't skied in years.....it must feel a litle like flying!

The end of summer was always about getting ready for school again. Mother rush us to pick out school clothes and binders. Me wondering if they were going to like me at this school. Then it was me rushing my girls to pick out clothes and new binders. And me wondering if they were going to make friends at this school. Then it was me, at 40, picking out clothes and binders again as I went to college. And, again, I am wondering if I am up to meeting new people and making friends. Today, I don't even remember what day it is, retirement is great! Darn, I forgot to call my grandson and see if he made any friends at this school!

The day after Labor Day... just another day for me. Lately, they've all been like that... just one day, like the one before, like the next one will be. (I think I'm heading into another "valley"...)

I hope your schedule works out for you Angel. Still haven't gotten that email from you You are an amazing woman as you hold two jobs. I did that for a while and I am not sure I could do it these days. Keep up keeping on hon.

As for the end of summer and what it means to me. It means joy. I usually don't like summer very much because of the heat. Also the end of summer means that winter is almost here which I love winter. I love the holiday season specially Holloween. We just have to make it through Labor day which is soon and then the next holiday is Holloween. Who wouldn't love winter in that case? J/k! If I could find a pool these days I might miss summer more but I am really glad that its going this year.

My summer won't end until it's too cold to go boating...then it's winterize the boat and hibernate until spring.

I can't guarantee the copier working...but your new group will love you and if they they have any sense at all, they will learn from you!

Angel, R.N. sought a second opinion:
I also teach medical professionals at a local college... will they like me? Will I be able to teach them?

Well heck yeah, they'll like you! DUH! I've never met you in person and I adore you! Just wear the bra in that profile picture and their eyes will be glued to you. (You might get something else stickin' to you too! ) Cum to think of it, could we all be students at your A. NightinGayle Naughty Memorable Medickal Institute?

Certain also that you will do fine teaching them. Look at what you did with me, f'rinstance. I learned from you how to blog. I learned not to say bad things about nurses behind their backs... like how they are ditsy diagnosers... or how they are suddenly scarce and not around when you need them for medical purposes... or how easy they are when you get them alone in the supply tent. OH, wait! I learned that last one from Dr. "Hawkeye" Pierce.

The end of the summer has always been a depressing time for me but it doesn't do a single thing to my schedule. The weather stays pretty warm here in southeast Virginia until well into October but I don't look forward to the falling leaves. Most of all, I hate the thought of closing my pool, the backyard looks so bleak when the pool is covered.

Yea! That means that the recreation boating season is over, and the fishing season has started.
I fish a chain of lakes in northern Illinois that during the summer there are over 5,000 boats on the lakes on weekends. All going as fast as they possibly can, and a fisherman doesn't have a chance in hell to survive on the water. Once they put there boats up for the season, out come the fishermen. Me included.

Good luck with classes!

Well, since I graduated college last year, the end of summer doesn't mean the beginning of school like it used to. So no more back-to-school shopping and spending $350.00+ dollars on books that I'll get $30 back if I'm lucky and all that.

But I hate the summer, so good riddance, I say. I'm an autumn man, and for me, the fall can't come fast enough. Cool weather, multicolor leaves, football, all the good holidays, and in November, a visit to a beautiful older woman from here. Yeah, BRING ON AUTUMN!

I love the fall. I love the summer warmth lingering and the colors and the green that's still everywhere. It's my time of power. So I enjoy it when summer shifts to fall. I am glad that my son will be back in school because I'll have more privacy inmy house again. I can spend much of my time nude until the house gets too cold to run around that way again. I'm going to get some new binding for my snow shoes this year and go snowshoeing alot. I need to practice tracking so that I'll be able to bow hunt in the 2007 season. Good luck with your teaching schedule. I hope we'll still see you around here. Hugs!

End of summer means cooler weather, which with the heat in Kansas is a major blessing. I don't have any rituals, however...unless moving short sleeve shirts to back closet and long sleeve shirts to front closet counts.

See where I am there are really only a few seasons, summer, pre-winter, and winter. Winter=Doubletime. When things get cold, machines dont start and at -40 everything breaks easily. So winters are hectic.
Summers are slower. So how do I feel about the end of summer.
Hurry up and finish already.

When my kids were still young enough to be in school, then it was school shopping and learning to all be ready to leave at the same time in the morning. Now that they both have families of their own, there is no more school shopping, etc for me!

I am looking forward to fall and watching the leaves turn, and the cool, cooler, cold nights! I can hardly wait for it to snow!

We all get the jitters, but you will do fine! The first time doing anything usually makes me nervous, but then it usually smooth sailing from there. I hope that things go smooth as you transition into fall!

Hugs to you Angel.

(sigh) I worked so hard all summer trying to keep enough ahead of things to make ends meet that I hardly noticed summer at all . I'm only 5 miles away from the beach and I made it there only once all season.

I like fall OK and there's still going to be beach time, I just find it a little depressing (I never seem to get as much sense of time passing as the change from summer to fall/winter). Sorry to sound like such a wet towel .

I know you'll do fine with your teaching, we expect a full report .

I really like autumn--so I like when summer ends. It so wonderful to see all of the leaves turn into those beautiful colors. I love to walk around in my fuzzy sweaters and watch my breath before me.

Campfires take on new meaning when it gets a little colder. You huddle next to your guy so closely... I love that so much.

8/24/2006 8:04 pm

Good for you, one of these days, they'll all be out of school and the clicks won't matter. Life, jobs and responsibility will overtake them - some will swim, a few will sink. Do the best you can! Take care.

I don't want it to end but I can feel it coming. The evenings are getting cool and I have seen some flocking birds (birds in flocks, now no reading that nasty like).
Usually the Fall means new clothes. Always did during school and it seems to carry today. Labor day used to mean a camping trip with another family when I was growing up.
It means a change of attire at work. Not so casual.
Helping a friend close his pool. The least we can do after swimming in it over the summer. One last BBQ before though.

Fall used to be the start of several traditions, but life has changed. Mama's not here anymore, so I don't get to help her start her Christmas baking. My kids are all finished with school, so there's no back to school shopping for them. Even I am finished with school for a change, so no more college football games on Saturdays. I had hoped to have my own classroom this year, but that hasn't happened yet. So I guess the only tradition I'll be keeping is putting my shorts away and getting out my long pants and sweaters. That sorta sucks!

Can't wait to hear how your first day of school went! I know it will have been great.

Once I no longer had children in school and didn't have to do the "back to school" shopping, I don't really have a "summer's over" feeling. My life is pretty much the same now, winter, spring, summer and fall.
