lil bit of heaven

I felt discontent rising in myself this morning and took a walk with hopes to vanquish what is becoming a most stubborn emotion. The wind was cold but not enough to make you want to cover up; it was refreshing as it caressed my face. I love where I live, though most days feel a little displaced; I love the city, the noises, the people, but out here ….well when I take a walk, then I am content again. I always feel like I may have a small glimpse of what heaven could be. This morning I only heard a few noises, the rustling of dried leaves from fall, and the moan of the heavy oaks as they swayed in the wind. I heard the old man down the street chopping some wood for his fire. The only other sound was my shoes against what is left of the snow and ice on the street.

I didn’t walk too far today, only just to where the road goes down to the valley; from there I can see the main street of a quiet little town. Scanning the horizon I can see the river valley. This is the only time of year you can see it from there, the trees are so old and tall that during the summer months it is not visible. I took in the details of my picture perfect view; I saw the river bridge, the church steeple peeking up through the valley trees, the old hotel against the hillside. Save for the few cars that were darting in and out through the streets, and the unsightly candy apple red gas station, I could almost picture what it may have looked like 100 years past.

I stood there for awhile taking it all in….I usually find contentment in my walk, and did today but found myself momentarily restless and wishing the snow would melt so I could make my way to the cliffs. I’m certain that I could even now, but am hesitant to trudge through the snow and ice on the cliffs alone, though honestly my desire is to toss safety to the wind. I debated that today as I stood looking out across the valley; but gave in to uncertainty; I’ll let those more adventurous than I enjoy the view, perhaps that’s what makes me appreciate my secret lil spot all the more. I can't wait for spring to come again....

I've been to the spot a few times. It's an awesome view. The roar of the rapids just below, the smell of the pine trees. The view from the river is equally impressive.
