Gym Stupidity

I went out Friday night intending to have a relaxed evening with the boyfriend of my best friend.

We planned on grilling out, and drinking a few drinks, maybe watch a DVD, nothing too dramatic. I figured since he had an open bar and told me to help myself, I would. I started drinking Captain and Diet Cokes at around 8:30. Another friend showed up and we started the festivities.

We grilled some pork tenderloins and made some wild rice, as well as salad and green beans. It was a pretty healthy meal.

The other friend took off at about 1:00 or so. Her boyfriend, I could tell, was pretty drunk. I was getting there, but thought I was fine. Then, my best friend came home. She is still mad at him, and she actually took things out on me. She yelled at us for not watching her dogs very well, as it had dirt all over it.

I left and got home by about 3:00AM. I had already had plans to get up early, workout, layout for an hour, then go home and get cleaned up for a festival later on that day. Well, I got up at around 10:00AM. I was completely hung over. My friend, from the night before, picked me up and we were off to the gym. We thought about stopping for breakfast on the way, but I decided it was probably best to just skip it and eat afterward.

I knew that my anxiety was slightly raised due to the lack of good sleep and not eating. I was about half way through my workout when I started to get really dizzy. I thought it was just my head screwing with me, so I attempted another 2 sets of my routine. My heart rate, I could tell, was a little higher than usual. My anxiety was really kicking in, and I was shaking noticeablly. I could not continue. I had to call my friend to come and pick me up. I really thought I was going to slip into a panic attack.

After he picked me up, I went and immediately got some food. Within about 10 mins, I was back to normal.

When people say that you should get proper sleep and eat well for working out, this is a prime example of why. I probably would've been ok, had I just eaten something before. It really did make me nervous, but I now know that I have to really pay attention to my diet and sleep.

Sounds like you were hypoglycemic, low blood sugar, tends to mimic a panic attack. You felt better after you ate, blood sugar level rising, see hypoglycemic

Yes, I remember reading that a while ago... I should not have worked out that day!

I'm exactly the same, almost neurotic about making sure I'm properly nourished and hydrated before exercise.

I don't like to eat immediately before, especially if I'm playing football(soccer) as I hate feeling the contents of my stomach sloshing around as I run, but it's so frustrating when your performance is effected by something as simple as diet.

There is no way I could run as much as you! Damn, I would have to eat 3 meals before that excercise!

Yep.... you got it....

You can not burn energy that isn't there! When working out your body burns the blood sugars and carbs first as it takes some time for the body to switch to burning fat and it can't convert fat into energy fast enough DURING a workout.. so when your body runs out of available energy that is exactly what happens.... it has happened to me a few times... and a carb drink always brings me right back!

Ya gotta EAT right!

Nods... I agree. I did know better, but I didn't think my body would be THAT sensitive about it...

Was it anxiety or the fact that your body needed fuel?
