It is All About Perspective

The other night as we sat and waited for the fireworks to begin, the clouds broke briefly and the moon appeared. For whatever reason, I remembered something that Jim Lovell talked about when I had the opportunity to meet him. (In case you don't know who he is, he is the guy Tom Hanks portrayed in Apollo 13)

Mr. Lovell said before he flew to the moon on Apollo 8 (the first mission to leave Earth orbit and go to the moon, but not land there) he would stand in his backyard, hold his arm outstretched, close one eye and place his thumb over the moon.

If you try this one night, you will see that your thumb blocks the moon out completely.

Mr. Lovell said when Apollo 8 came around from behind the dark side of the moon, the Earth began to become visible. Finally, when it was completely visible, he realized how small the Earth was. He said he held out his arm like he had done some many times on Earth, closed one eye and his thumb blocked out the Earth completely.

Mr. Lovell said at that moment, he realized just how insignificant the Earth is compared to the overall size of the universe and that it made him realize how insignificant so many of our "problems" are.

Those who know me know I have been through a very trying 18 months. But, I have always tried to keep my perspective. I have met several people here on A FF alone that have or are facing life-threatening illnesses. Their attitudes and outlooks amaze would never know the pain and suffering they go through if you didn't know about their condition already. It makes me ashamed at times that I have spent so much time wallowing in self pity and whining.

No matter how bad life has gotten for me at times, I always try to remember...someone has it worse than me, so be thankful you have what you have.

I know this isn't a typical A FF blog, but like it is MY ramblings and random thoughts.

hey JVT - wallowing is allowed but only for 24 hours, then up and at 'em

you have never been anything but open, generous and i doubt msot know what you have had to endure

just remember if you can - that you are loved and that there are many who would help if you let them

tight hugs (and tosses in a fresh cookie)

You cannot conceive the many without the one.
