I didn't know I could do that!

My car overheated yestarday on the way home from work.I got lucky,It happened right in front of Pep Boys.I whipped into the lot parked and walked over to the service desk. The mechanic said the thermostat was frozen.
I just paid the rent, and I didn't have enough money for them to fix it,so I bought a thermostat and some foragasket. When the car cooled off I drove home(About 8 blocks).I have some wrenches and I took the hose of and the the cover and removed the thermostat.I put the cover back on.and drove to WalMart.
That's when I saw the new thermostat still on the seat!
The car ran OK and didn't over heat.I went over to Automotive and told them what happened and the mechanic said not to worry about it.I couldn't believe what I was hearing. But I guess my car is OK and I'm taking the thermostat back and get my money back.
I didn't know you could drive a car with parts left out!

Your thermostat controls how much coolant leaves the engine. It stops the flow till it reaches a certain temperature, then opens up. Without it, water keeps flowing through and your engine will probably never heat up to normal operating temperature. If you live in northern states, like Michigan, you wouldn't have any heat in your car during the winter.

Brl is right...I wouldn't take that thermostat back unless you really want to drive that car with no heat in the winter time.
