Saving A Life

One late night I stepped outside for a moment to smoke a cigarette. It was 100 am on a Saturday night. As I lit my cigarette I heard the erie sound of a dog yelping in the distance. At first I didn't give it much attention. Then I heard it again. I began to walk toward the sound and I couldn't quite figure out which direction it was coming from but I knew it was futher away than walking distance. The dogs yelping increased as I turned around and walked back towards my house. Once I got back to the house I decided I would take a drive and find where this dogs yelping was coming from. I got into my car, backed out of the driveway, and rolled down the windows so I could sense where the dogs yelping was coming from. The yelping took me a block away from a busy intersection where I saw this dark little figure of a puppy writhing around on the street in pain. The puppy had been hit by a car. It was laying in the middle of one of the northbound lanes heading into the intersection. I pulled into a parking lot next to the street and got out. As I walked up to that little puppy I saw a pool of blood where it lay. At one point I thought it was dead and then all of a sudden it would jump, roll around and yelp in pain.

At this time it was around 120 am and I knew that the bars were beginning to close and the traffic would pick up. I bent over the puppy and talked to it saying that everything would be okay. I didn't know quite what to do. I thought about picking the puppy up but feared I would injure it more. I then decided to walk up about 50 yards or so from the puppy in order to ward off traffic. I feared that if I didn't that it would surely be run over again as the bars closed and people would be leaving. As the traffic picked up I would wave my arms frantically as cars approached me yielding them off into the other lane. At one point this one car even came to a screaching stop because they didn't even notice me until they were about 10 yards from me. As the cars would merge over they would slow down to see this little puppy laying there yelping. Then all of a sudden this lady pulled over into the parking lot where I had parked. She came over to me to say that she had called animal control and they would be there shortly. Within a few minutes animal control showed up. They came over and gently picked the puppy up. As they did the puppy, covered in blood, perked up a little and looked at me. Once the animal control left I got back into my car and headed back home.

The next morning I called the American Humane Society where animal control had taken the puppy. I asked if they could give me any information about the puppy that had been hit earlier that morning. They told me that the puppy was doing well and in fact it had been reunited with its owner. They went on to say that the owner had just arrived there and asked me if I would like to talk to her. Of course I said yes. The owner got on the phone and tearfully thanked me over and over again. She told me where she lived which was about a block away from where I had found the puppy. She invited me to come over. I came over that day. The owner was so happy! She brought the puppy in to show me how it was doing. As I knelt by the puppy it licked my hand. I will never forget that experience.

Sometimes when I've laid my sleepy head down at night I'll remember that. It brings a warm feeling still today.

Hey Wicked. Glad I stopped by. Liked the story. Actually had a similar experience, except it was with a kitten. We had 4 or 5 people stopped by the roadside taking care of this little cat. I don't even like cats! I checked with animal control like you did but my little kitten didn't get claimed. So on the last day, like the soft heart I am, I went down and adopted him. Kept him about three weeks before my alergies were killing me. So, I found him a good home. So there you have it.

Interesting, so you have been officially designated as a "hottie"

KCUincorn,...what a coincidence huh? I have to say that experience stayes fresh in mind and whenever I may feel a little down for one reason or another I'll remember that and it brings a warm feeling to my heart.

Yes, seems I've been labled a 'hottie'.
