To love is to be vulnerable

To love is to be vulnerable. Love anything and your heart will certainly be wrung and possibly be broken. If you want to make sure of keeping it intact, you must give your heart to no one, not even to an animal. Wrap it carefully round with hobbies and little luxuries; avoid all entanglements; lock it safe in the casket or coffin of your selfishness. But in that casket -safe,dark,motionless, airless- it will change. It will not be broken, it will not become unbreakable, impenetrable, irredeemable. The alternative to tragedy or at least to the risk of tragedy is damnation. The only place outside of heaven where you can be perfectly safe from all the dangers and perturbation of love is hell.

After reading this post a Tina Turnert song popped into my head. Her voice singing out "What's love got to do with it? What's love but a second hand emotion What's love got to do with it? Who needs a heart when a heart can be broken?" Followed by Bonnie Raitt's woeful rendition of "I can't make you love me if you don't. You can't make your heart go somewhere it won't. I can't make you love me if you don't."

I have been both and neither is easy. Ideal is to be loved by the one whom you love.
