Small Things ...

This may, fundamentally, be a sex-oriented site but this is not yet another piece about a man’s ‘size’ not being important. First of all, I’m not qualified to comment and, secondly, comments from various sources suggest ‒ much to my chagrin ‒ that this may be no more than a matter of opinion anyway.

No, this is about some other small thing, one that has me sitting here grinning.

First some background is in order. As some of you might know, I moved a few months ago from a flat to temporary accommodation, a room at the hospital where I work. While I was living in the flat, my computer lived on the breakfast bar. I never used it to eat at anyway and it meant I was positioned in sight of the TV and in easy reach of the kettle and fridge! What more can a single guy want? Actually, don’t answer that … but you get the idea.

When I moved to the room (also known as The Pink Palace), I realised there was nothing to put the computer on. Being of a practical turn of mind, I turned over a large cardboard box that I’d used to move my stuff in (ironically, it had originally contained a computer) and used that as my makeshift PC table. It worked.

Until it stopped working, that is. A weeks back or so it started to collapse, causing the monitor to lean at an alarming angle. Still being practical, I replaced it with my chair which was, again, functional but hardly ideal.

I’d been looking every now and then for a proper computer trolley but hadn’t found one that I really liked (hey, I can be choosy, even when I’m broke!).

Then today colleagues of mine were clearing surplus stuff out of one of the departments that was due for refurbishment. Imagine my surprise and glee when I was offered ‒ yes! ‒ an office-quality computer trolley!

So here I sit now with my monitor at eye level, the keyboard overhanging my knees on a proper pull-out shelf, mouse handy, cables tucked neatly away … oh, dear reader, you can’t imagine how pleased I am

I know, silly isn’t it? How absurd that such a little, trivial thing can bring me so much pleasure.

Yet I don’t mind. I’d rather be able to take joy from these small things than be miserable in the absence of a continual stream of luxuries.

On the other hand, the occasional luxury goes down well too

I'm glad you have a proper "computer trolley" Brother Q...and that joy has once again returned to your life!! Guess I can't quite comprehend your excitement as I sit in my reclining loveseat, writing this on my laptop, connected to my wireless (DSL ) network. Ah yes...the retired life!

All of that aside...the big question to me is...with a proper computer trolley...does that mean your kettle and fridge are now out of reach and that you can't see the TV anymore?

It's starting to sound like home. Careful! Make it too cosy, and you'll not want to leave!

Cannon ... The problems with having all those wonderful things, of course, are that you have more to lose and that it takes so much more to make you happy! But, no, my fridge and kettle are in even easier reach now: I'm in a tiny room after all!

MMMSlick ... I'd like to believe that ...

Helga ... No chance of that, I assure you! As long as I know that one day, no matter how far away, I shall be back in my own place I can cope but here forever? Yegods!

Spunky ... I couldn't agree more!

Dev ... I know, I know ... you watch: before you know it I'll be craving real luxuries like toothpaste and food

Wacky ... Where have I heard that before?

Goddess ... True ... and I am so grateful for the fact.

Free ... You mean size really doesn't matter? I know I said this piece wasn't about that but I couldn't resist it any longer

Dizzy ... You may be right about that. Certainly, some days later, I still love it!
