Services We Didn't Know We Needed Until They Became Available #137

The Radio Times Text-Message Reminder Service.

British readers desperate not to miss out on a particular TV programme can now get advanced warning on their mobile phones.

The Radio Times (for overseas viewers, this is a BBC publication and Web site for TV and radio listings) now publishes codes to be texted from your mobile phone to their central server; in return, a reminder is sent back to your phone as a text message 15 minutes or an hour before the selected programme is due to start.

How did we ever manage without it? In today's hurly-burly, crazy, mixed-up world how can we ever hope to remember all those must-see programmes with brain-power alone?

Some of you may have had the thought that you could always set an alarm on your phone in any case to achieve the same result. This is clearly archaic, antiquated thinking: at a mere 25p per reminder (plus, as always, the standard network message charge), the new service clearly beats having to remember how to set the alarm. Something else you no longer need to remember!

So cast aside your antiquated ideas and dive into this new world of Memory Outsourcing.

Next week: how to make money by selling your redundant brain as dog food.

Jx

You may, dear reader, be remarking on the unusual shortness of this piece and you would be right. The author is suffering from a cold (not, I would point out to all women readers, the flu) and (1) is having trouble writing coherent sentences, (2) can see double and therefore suspects that he has written more than is actually the case and (3) just wants to go to bed.

And shame on any of you who are applauding this side-effect!

You know, there are people who are going to be stupid enough to sign up for this service. I want to know what happens if they're not home when the reminder goes off...

Now, seeing double, eh? I'm sorry, but I can't resist...

As I sit here at work, failing to find the mental firepower to put together a new blog entry for the 29th, I can't help reflecting upon what I once read was the sovereign remedy for a guy with a cold: a cold bed and a hot woman.

I can manage the cold bed ... unless I get any volunteers within the next few hours though I guess I'll have to settle for a cold bed and a hot toddy instead
